🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Tailgate

• Use your hands to lower the tailgate fully.
• This exposes the inner edge of each rear tail lamp assembly.
• Work on one side at a time.

Step 2: Remove the Driver-Side Tail Lamp Screws

• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inner edge of the driver-side tail lamp.
• Set the screws in a safe place so they do not roll away.
• No torque is used during removal.

Step 3: Pull the Tail Lamp Assembly Straight Rearward

• Hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight back from the truck body.
• If it feels stuck, use a trim clip removal tool gently at the outer edge to help release the alignment pins.
• Do not pry against painted metal with a screwdriver.
• Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 4: Identify the Bulb Sockets

• Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
• The bulb sockets are the round plastic pieces with wiring attached.
• Use your hands to locate the socket for the bulb you are replacing.
• For a full bulb refresh, replace the tail/running light, stop/turn signal, and reverse bulbs on each side.

Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb Socket

• Use your hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
• Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Remove the Old Bulb

• Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber towel to grip the old bulb.
• Pull the bulb straight out of the socket if it is a wedge-style bulb.
• If the bulb has locking pins, gently press in and turn counterclockwise, then remove it.
• Do not crush the glass.

Step 7: Install the New Bulb

• Use nitrile gloves to handle the new bulb.
• Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
• If it is a locking-pin bulb, line up the pins, press in gently, and turn clockwise to lock it.
• Make sure the bulb feels secure and does not wobble.

Step 8: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

• Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp housing.
• Use your hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
• Do not use pliers; the socket can crack.

Step 9: Test the Driver-Side Bulbs Before Reinstalling

• Turn the headlight switch on to test the tail/running light.
• Press the brake pedal or have a helper press it to test the brake light.
• Use the turn signal switch to test the rear turn signal.
• Shift to reverse only with the parking brake set and your foot firmly on the brake to test the reverse light.
• Turn the ignition and lights back off after testing.

Step 10: Reinstall the Driver-Side Tail Lamp Assembly

• Line up the outer alignment pins with the holes in the truck body.
• Use your hands to press the tail lamp straight forward until it seats evenly.
• Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the two screws.
• Tighten the screws snug only. Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) if using a small torque screwdriver.
• Do not overtighten plastic lamp screws.

Step 11: Repeat on the Passenger Side

• Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two passenger-side tail lamp screws.
• Use your hands and the trim clip removal tool if needed to pull the lamp straight rearward.
• Use nitrile gloves to replace the same bulbs on the passenger side.
• Reinstall the bulb sockets by turning them clockwise until locked.
• Reinstall the lamp assembly and tighten the screws snug. Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) if using a small torque screwdriver.
