📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your RAV4 on a flat, solid surface.
- 🔒 Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark bolt positions before removal. This helps keep the vehicle close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.
- 💧 Spray penetrating oil on the control arm bolts and ball joint nut. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
- 📌 A control arm is the metal suspension arm that holds the wheel position. A bushing is the rubber mount inside the arm.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Break them loose on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the RAV4
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your RAV4 at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Use safety glasses and mechanic gloves before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Control Arm and Bushing Area
- Use a flashlight if available to inspect the front lower control arm bushings.
- Look for cracked rubber, torn rubber, metal-to-metal contact, or fluid-like stains from hydraulic bushings.
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the control arm bolts and washers before loosening them.
Step 5: Remove Any Small Brackets Attached to the Control Arm
- Use a 10mm socket or 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any brake hose or sensor wire brackets attached near the control arm area.
- Move the brackets aside gently. Do not pull on the wiring or brake hose.
Step 6: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- The ball joint is the pivot joint that lets the wheel turn and move up and down.
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint nut.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to loosen and remove the lower ball joint nut.
- Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
- Use a rubber mallet only for light taps if needed. Do not hammer directly on the threaded stud.
Step 7: Remove the Front Lower Control Arm Bolts
- Support the control arm with one hand so it does not drop suddenly.
- Use a 19mm socket, 21mm socket, 19mm wrench, or 21mm wrench as needed to remove the front and rear control arm mounting bolts/nuts.
- Use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar if the bolts are tight.
- Keep track of bolt direction and washer position.
Step 8: Remove the Control Arm
- Use an 18-inch pry bar to gently work the control arm out of the subframe mounts.
- Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
- Compare the old and new control arm assemblies side by side before installation.
Step 9: If Pressing Bushings Only, Press Out the Old Bushings
- Use a hydraulic press 12-ton (specialty) and bushing driver kit (specialty) to press the old bushings out of the control arm.
- Support the control arm squarely in the press before applying pressure.
- Mark the bushing orientation before removal using a paint marker.
- Press the new bushing in straight using the bushing driver kit (specialty).
- Important: Do not press against the rubber center. Press only on the outer metal shell.
- Full arm replacement is easier.
Step 10: Install the New Control Arm
- Position the new control arm into the subframe mounts by hand.
- Use a rubber mallet for light alignment taps if needed.
- Install the control arm mounting bolts by hand first.
- Use a 19mm socket, 21mm socket, 19mm wrench, or 21mm wrench to snug the bolts only.
- Do not fully torque the inner bushing bolts while the suspension is hanging.
Step 11: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint
- Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new ball joint nut by hand.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen it to align the hole.
Step 12: Reinstall Brackets and Clips
- Use a 10mm socket or 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any brake hose or sensor wire brackets removed earlier.
- Make sure hoses and wires are not twisted, stretched, or rubbing.
Step 13: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the outer control arm area to raise the suspension until it is close to normal ride height.
- This step prevents the rubber bushings from being twisted at rest.
- Use a torque wrench with the correct socket/wrench to tighten the front lower control arm mounting fasteners.
- Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs) for the main lower control arm-to-subframe fasteners.
- Note: If your replacement hardware includes different instructions, follow the hardware supplier’s torque note.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place the wheels back onto the hubs.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the RAV4 and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your RAV4 to the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Bounce the front of your RAV4 gently and listen for clunks.
- ✅ Check that brake hoses and ABS sensor wires are clipped in place.
- ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Listen for knocking, popping, or pulling.
- ✅ Get a front wheel alignment as soon as possible after this repair.
- ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 miles.
- ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, do not delay the alignment.
