🔧 RAV4 - Spark Plug Replacement

Replacing the spark plugs on your RAV4 helps restore smooth starts, steady idle, fuel economy, and proper hybrid engine operation. The 2.5L hybrid engine uses ignition coils on top of each spark plug, so you’ll remove the coils first, then replace the plugs one at a time.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before starting; spark plugs thread into the aluminum cylinder head and hot threads can be damaged.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key fob away from the vehicle so the hybrid system cannot accidentally wake up.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal or power button while working.
  • ⚠️ Avoid touching orange high-voltage cables or hybrid components; this job does not require high-voltage service.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the 12V battery is recommended for beginners to prevent accidental READY mode activation.
  • ⚠️ Replace spark plugs only with the correct iridium type; do not use anti-seize unless the plug manufacturer specifically says to.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket

  • 6-inch 3/8-inch extension
  • 5/8-inch spark plug socket with rubber insert
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Spark plug gap gauge
  • Dielectric grease
  • Clean shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • Intake manifold gasket set - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your RAV4 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • ❄️ Make sure the engine is cool to the touch.
  • 🔑 Move the key fob at least 15 feet away from the vehicle.
  • 🔋 Open the rear cargo area and disconnect the negative 12V battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • 🧠 A spark plug socket is a deep socket with a rubber insert that holds the plug so it does not drop into the engine bay.
  • 🧠 A torque wrench tightens bolts and spark plugs to the exact tightness Toyota requires.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help release the rubber grommets.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
  • Lift straight up, not sideways.

Step 2: Create Access to the Ignition Coils

  • Look at the top of the engine for the four ignition coils; each coil has one electrical connector and one retaining bolt.
  • On your RAV4, the cowl area can make rear access tight, but the spark plugs are serviceable from the top.
  • If a wiring harness bracket blocks access, use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to remove the bracket fastener and move the harness gently aside.
  • Do not pull hard on wiring; only move it enough to reach the coils.

Step 3: Disconnect the Ignition Coil Connectors

  • Use your thumb to press the lock tab on the first ignition coil connector.
  • If the tab is hard to press, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.
  • Slide the connector straight off the coil.
  • Repeat for all four coils.
  • Never pull by the wires.

Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coils

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt from the first coil.
  • Twist the coil slightly by hand to loosen the rubber boot.
  • Pull the coil straight upward and place it in order on a clean shop towel.
  • Repeat for the other three coils.
  • During installation, tighten each ignition coil bolt to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 5: Clean Around the Spark Plug Wells

  • Put on safety glasses.
  • Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt out of each spark plug well before removing any plug.
  • This prevents grit from falling into the engine when the spark plug comes out.
  • If compressed air is not available, carefully wipe around the wells with clean shop towels.

Step 6: Remove the First Spark Plug

  • Attach the 5/8-inch spark plug socket with rubber insert to the 6-inch 3/8-inch extension and 3/8-inch ratchet.
  • Lower the socket straight down onto the spark plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the plug.
  • Once loose, spin it out gently and lift it straight up.
  • If it feels stuck, stop and tighten it slightly, then loosen again slowly.
  • Do not force stuck plugs.

Step 7: Check the New Spark Plug

  • Use a spark plug gap gauge to verify the new plug gap is about 0.044 in (1.1 mm), unless the plug box specifies otherwise.
  • Do not pry on or bend the fine iridium center electrode.
  • Do not coat the spark plug threads with anti-seize unless the spark plug manufacturer specifically instructs it.
  • Add a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the ignition coil boot, not on the spark plug threads.

Step 8: Install the New Spark Plug

  • Place the new spark plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket with rubber insert.
  • Use the 6-inch 3/8-inch extension by hand only to start threading the plug clockwise.
  • Turn it several full turns by hand to make sure it is not cross-threaded.
  • Attach the 3/8-inch torque wrench and tighten the spark plug to Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start every plug first.

Step 9: Repeat for the Remaining Spark Plugs

  • Use the 5/8-inch spark plug socket with rubber insert, 6-inch 3/8-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the next plug.
  • Use the spark plug gap gauge to verify the replacement plug.
  • Use the 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten each new plug to Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Work one cylinder at a time so nothing gets mixed up.

Step 10: Reinstall the Ignition Coils

  • Push each ignition coil straight down over its spark plug until fully seated.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to install each coil bolt.
  • Tighten each ignition coil bolt to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Give each connector a gentle tug to confirm it is locked.

Step 11: Reinstall Any Moved Brackets and Engine Cover

  • If you moved a wiring harness bracket, reinstall it using the 10mm socket or 12mm socket.
  • Tighten small harness bracket bolts snugly; do not overtighten plastic-mounted brackets.
  • Align the engine cover with its mounting posts and press down by hand until it seats.

Step 12: Reconnect the 12V Battery

  • Reconnect the negative 12V battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the terminal securely so it cannot twist by hand.
  • Close the rear cargo battery access area.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bring the key fob back to the vehicle.
  • ✅ Press the brake pedal and start your RAV4 into READY mode.
  • ✅ Let the engine cycle on and off normally; hybrid operation may not keep the gasoline engine running continuously.
  • ✅ Listen for rough running, ticking from loose plugs, or misfire shaking.
  • ✅ If the check engine light appears, shut the vehicle off and recheck each ignition coil connector.
  • ✅ Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes and confirm smooth acceleration.
  • ✅ Some settings such as clock, window auto-up memory, or radio presets may need to be reset after 12V battery disconnect.
