📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Ranger on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool for at least 1 hour if it was recently driven.
- Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect the paint.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
- Keep dirt away from the plug wells. Dirt can fall into the engine when a spark plug is removed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover
- Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward if equipped.
- If resistance feels uneven, gently work one corner at a time by hand.
- Pull straight up, not sideways.
Step 2: Clear Access to the Ignition Coils
- Look across the top of the engine for four ignition coils. An ignition coil is the small electrical part that sits on top of each spark plug.
- If an intake tube or small bracket blocks access, use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket as needed to remove the fasteners.
- Set any removed fasteners in order so they go back in the same spots.
Step 3: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connectors
- Press the locking tab on the first coil connector by hand.
- If the tab is stiff, use a flathead screwdriver gently to help release it.
- Pull the connector straight back from the coil.
- Repeat for all four ignition coils.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coils
- Use an 8mm socket to remove the bolt holding the first ignition coil.
- Twist the ignition coil slightly by hand to loosen the rubber boot.
- Pull the coil straight upward and out of the spark plug well.
- Repeat for the remaining three coils.
- Lay the coils in order from front to rear so they return to the same cylinders.
Step 5: Blow Dirt Out of the Spark Plug Wells
- Put on safety glasses.
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt and grit out of each spark plug well.
- Do this before removing any spark plugs.
- Clean wells protect the engine.
Step 6: Remove the Old Spark Plugs
- Install a 5/8-inch spark plug socket onto a 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Lower the socket straight down onto the first spark plug.
- Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the spark plug.
- Once loose, spin it out carefully and lift it straight up with the socket.
- Repeat for all four spark plugs.
- If a plug feels stuck, stop and tighten it slightly, then loosen again slowly.
Step 7: Check the New Spark Plug Gap
- Use a spark plug gap gauge to check each new spark plug before installation. The gap is the small space between the center tip and the curved ground strap.
- Use the underhood emissions label specification if shown. Common 2.3L EcoBoost replacement plug gap is typically around 0.028-0.031 inch, but the label is the authority.
- Do not forcefully bend fine iridium tips. If a plug is far out of spec, replace it.
Step 8: Install the New Spark Plugs by Hand
- Place one new spark plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket.
- Lower it into the plug well using the 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension.
- Turn the extension by hand clockwise several turns until the plug threads smoothly.
- If it does not turn easily by hand, remove it and start again.
- Hand-starting prevents thread damage.
Step 9: Torque the Spark Plugs
- Attach a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and extension.
- Tighten each spark plug carefully.
- Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Do not over-tighten. The cylinder head is aluminum and can be damaged.
Step 10: Reinstall the Ignition Coils
- Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside the end of each coil boot. Dielectric grease helps keep moisture out of electrical connections.
- Push each ignition coil straight down onto its spark plug until seated.
- Use an 8mm socket to reinstall each coil bolt.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Coil Connectors
- Push each ignition coil connector onto its coil by hand until it clicks.
- Use needle-nose pliers only if a connector is hard to position, and do not crush the plastic.
- Gently tug each connector to confirm it is locked.
Step 12: Reinstall Removed Parts and Reconnect Battery
- Reinstall any intake tube or bracket fasteners using the 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
- Push the engine appearance cover back down by hand if equipped.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- Listen for smooth running. A rough idle may mean a coil connector is not fully clicked in.
- Check that no tools, rags, or loose parts remain in the engine bay.
- Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
- If the check engine light flashes, stop driving and recheck coil connections and spark plug seating.
