🔧 XT4 - Spark Plug Replacement

This is a manageable first ignition job. Remove the engine cover and four ignition coils, then replace the plugs one cylinder at a time. I’d use the listed NGK laser-iridium plugs, which are supplied at the correct 0.030-inch gap and have a 60,000-mile service interval.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Let the engine become completely cold. Removing plugs from a hot aluminum cylinder head can damage its threads.
  • 🛑 Wear safety glasses when blowing debris from the plug wells.
  • 🛑 Never allow dirt, tools, or loose hardware to fall into an open spark-plug hole.
  • 🛑 Pull electrical connectors by their plastic bodies, never by their wires.
  • 🛑 Do not apply anti-seize to the new coated plug threads. It changes tightening force and can cause over-tightening.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnection is not normally required. Keep the ignition switched off and the key away from the XT4.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 6-inch 3/8-inch drive extension
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench rated 5-30 Nm
  • 0.030-inch wire spark plug gap gauge
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small pick tool
  • Compressed-air blow gun
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • NGK laser-iridium spark plugs - Gap: 0.030" - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric ignition grease - Qty: 1 small tube

Replace all four plugs together. The listed plugs use a fine-wire iridium center electrode, so inspect the gap gently and do not bend the center electrode.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the XT4 on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch the ignition off.
  • Allow the engine to cool for at least two hours, preferably overnight.
  • Open the hood and move the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Clean loose dust from the top of the engine before removing anything.
  • No infotainment service mode, scan-tool command, battery registration, or programming is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Grip the engine cover near its mounting points and pull it straight upward by hand.
  • If a rubber mount sticks, lift gently with the plastic trim removal tool.
  • Set the cover somewhere clean where its rubber mounting grommets cannot be lost.

Step 2: Disconnect the first ignition coil

  • Start at one end of the engine and work on only one cylinder at a time.
  • Use the small pick tool to release the coil connector lock without pulling on the wires.
  • Press the connector release and slide the connector straight off by hand.
  • One-at-a-time work prevents connector mix-ups.

Step 3: Remove the first ignition coil

  • Use the 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Twist the coil slightly by hand to release its rubber boot, then pull it straight upward.
  • Inspect the boot for oil, coolant, cracking, burn marks, or a white lightning-like line indicating an electrical leak.

Step 4: Clean the spark-plug well

  • Put on the safety glasses.
  • Use the compressed-air blow gun to clear dirt from the plug well before loosening the plug.
  • If oil is pooled in the well, stop and correct the leak before installing the new plug.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plug

  • Fit the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket to the 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch ratchet.
  • Lower the socket straight onto the plug and turn it counterclockwise.
  • If the plug feels unusually tight, turn it slightly clockwise, then loosen it gradually. Do not force it.
  • Lift the plug out while keeping the extension straight.

Step 6: Inspect the old spark plug

  • A light tan or gray firing tip is generally normal.
  • Wet fuel may indicate a misfire. Heavy black deposits may indicate rich running or oil consumption.
  • Cracked porcelain, a melted electrode, or heavy oil deposits require diagnosis beyond routine replacement.

Step 7: Inspect the new plug gap

  • Use the 0.030-inch wire spark plug gap gauge to verify the gap gently.
  • The specified range is approximately 0.026-0.030 inch (0.65-0.75 mm), and the listed plug is supplied at 0.030 inch. carmanualsonline.info
  • Do not force a wedge-style gauge between the fine electrodes and do not re-gap a damaged plug.

Step 8: Install the new spark plug by hand

  • Place the new plug inside the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket.
  • Use only the 6-inch extension at first. Turn the plug clockwise by hand until its tapered seat contacts the cylinder head.
  • If it will not turn easily for several complete rotations, remove it and start again. That resistance can mean cross-threading.
  • Do not apply anti-seize to the threads.

Step 9: Torque the spark plug

  • Attach the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench while keeping the extension straight.
  • Torque the spark plug to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs). This specification is listed for the XT4’s 2.0L turbo spark-plug procedure. howtoo.com
  • Stop as soon as the torque wrench clicks. More enthusiasm isn’t more sealing here.

Step 10: Reinstall the ignition coil

  • Apply a very small smear of dielectric grease inside the end of the coil boot. Keep grease away from the metal plug terminal.
  • Push the coil straight down until its boot seats firmly over the plug.
  • Install the retaining bolt with the 10mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque the ignition-coil bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs). howtoo.com
  • Reconnect the electrical connector and secure its lock.

Step 11: Replace the remaining three plugs

  • Repeat Steps 2 through 10 for the other three cylinders.
  • Use the same 10mm socket, 14mm spark plug socket, extension, ratchet, gap gauge, and torque wrench.
  • Confirm every coil connector is fully seated before continuing.

Step 12: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Inspect the cover’s rubber grommets and reposition any that remained on the engine mounting studs.
  • Align the cover over its mounts and press straight down by hand until every mount is seated.
  • No torque specification applies to the push-on engine cover.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for two or three minutes.
  • Listen for a steady idle and confirm the Check Engine light remains off.
  • If the engine shakes or the warning light flashes, switch it off immediately and recheck every coil connector.
  • Take a short, gentle test drive and verify normal acceleration.
  • A scan-tool reset is unnecessary unless a misfire code was stored before the repair.
