📋 Before You Begin
- Park your TITAN on level ground and let the engine cool fully.
- Set the parking brake and keep the key away from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect the paint.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- A spark plug socket has a rubber insert or magnet that holds the plug so it does not fall into the engine bay.
- A universal joint lets the socket bend slightly so you can reach angled plugs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover upward from its rubber mounting grommets.
- Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.
- Pull straight up gently.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
Step 3: Remove Intake Ducting for Access
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket to loosen the air intake tube clamps.
- Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps attached to the intake tube.
- Unplug any intake air sensor connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back.
- Remove the intake duct and set it aside.
- If more room is needed on the passenger side, use a 10mm socket to remove nearby intake resonator or bracket fasteners.
Step 4: Locate the Ignition Coils
- Your TITAN has eight ignition coils, one on top of each spark plug.
- Each coil has an electrical connector and a small retaining bolt.
- Work on one cylinder at a time to avoid mixing parts or leaving plug holes open.
Step 5: Clean Around the First Coil
- Put on safety glasses.
- Use a compressed air blow gun to clear dust and grit from around the ignition coil and spark plug well.
- This prevents debris from falling into the cylinder after the plug is removed.
Step 6: Remove the Ignition Coil
- Press the ignition coil connector lock tab and unplug the connector by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
- Twist the coil gently by hand, then pull it straight upward.
- Inspect the rubber boot for oil, cracking, swelling, or carbon tracking, which looks like a thin black lightning mark.
Step 7: Remove the Old Spark Plug
- Place a 5/8-inch spark plug socket on a 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Lower the socket straight into the spark plug well until it seats fully on the plug.
- Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the plug.
- If the plug feels stuck, tighten it slightly, then loosen again gently.
- Remove the spark plug from the well using the spark plug socket.
- Slow and straight prevents thread damage.
Step 8: Check the New Spark Plug
- Use a spark plug gap gauge to verify the new plug gap is correct for the replacement plug specification.
- Do not pry on the fine iridium center electrode.
- Do not apply anti-seize unless the spark plug manufacturer specifically says to.
Step 9: Install the New Spark Plug by Hand
- Place the new spark plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket.
- Use only the extension by hand at first, without the ratchet.
- Turn clockwise gently until the plug threads in smoothly.
- If it does not turn easily, remove it and start again.
- Once seated, attach the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench.
- Tighten the spark plug to Torque to 19.6 Nm (14 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the Ignition Coil
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the ignition coil boot.
- Push the coil straight down onto the spark plug until it fully seats.
- Use a 10mm socket to install the ignition coil retaining bolt.
- Tighten the ignition coil bolt snugly to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the ignition coil electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 11: Repeat for the Remaining Seven Spark Plugs
- Repeat Steps 5 through 10 for each remaining ignition coil and spark plug.
- Use the 3-inch extension, 6-inch extension, and universal joint as needed for tighter rear cylinders.
- Take your time on the rear plugs near the firewall.
- One plug at a time is safest.
Step 12: Reinstall Intake Ducting
- Reinstall the intake duct into its original position.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket to tighten the intake tube clamps.
- Reconnect any intake air sensor connectors until they click.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any hose clamps you removed.
- If the throttle body was removed, install a new throttle body gasket and use a 10mm socket to tighten the throttle body bolts evenly to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 13: Reconnect the Battery and Reinstall Cover
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the battery terminal nut snugly.
- Push the engine cover back down onto its rubber mounting grommets by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Start your TITAN and let it idle for a few minutes.
- Listen for a smooth idle and check that there are no warning lights.
- If the idle is slightly high after intake work, let the engine warm up and idle normally for several minutes.
- Take a short test drive and confirm smooth acceleration.
- Recheck the intake duct clamps after the test drive to make sure there are no loose air leaks.
