📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park (or 1st gear), and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely (at least 1 hour after driving).
- Set your tools out in order so nothing falls into the engine bay.
- A torque wrench ensures “not too tight.” (A torque wrench clicks when you reach the correct tightness.)
- A spark plug socket grips the plug safely. (It has a rubber insert to hold the plug.)
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Use a small flat trim tool to gently lift the cover corners if it’s tight.
- Lift the cover straight up and set it aside.
Step 2: Locate the ignition coils
- The 1.4L uses coil packs on top of each spark plug (one per cylinder).
- Work one cylinder at a time so connectors don’t get mixed up.
Step 3: Unplug the coil electrical connector
- Use your fingers first; if needed, use the small flat trim tool to gently release the locking tab.
- Pull on the connector body, not the wires.
Step 4: Remove the coil(s)
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt(s).
- Twist the coil slightly, then pull straight up to remove it.
- If the coil is stuck, keep twisting gently—don’t pry hard.
Step 5: Clean the spark plug well
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow out dust around the plug before removing it.
- This prevents grit from falling into the cylinder.
Step 6: Remove the old spark plug
- Use a 5/8" spark plug socket, 3/8" drive extension, and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the plug.
- If it feels extremely tight, stop and work it back and forth gently to avoid thread damage.
Step 7: Check and prep the new spark plug
- Use a feeler gauge set (0.6–1.2 mm) to verify the plug gap matches the spec printed on the plug box.
- Do not apply anti-seize unless the plug maker specifically says to; most modern plugs are coated and don’t need it.
- Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside the coil boot (a thin film). Dielectric grease helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
Step 8: Install the new spark plug
- Start the plug by hand using the 5/8" spark plug socket and 3/8" drive extension only (no ratchet at first) to prevent cross-threading.
- Once it seats, use a torque wrench (5–60 Nm range) to tighten: Torque to 23 Nm (17 ft-lbs).
- Hand-threading first is the best “newbie” trick.
Step 9: Reinstall the coil and connector
- Push the coil straight down until it fully seats on the plug.
- Install the coil bolt using the 10mm socket and snug it down (do not over-tighten).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks/locks.
Step 10: Repeat for the other 3 cylinders
- Repeat Steps 3–9 for each remaining spark plug.
Step 11: Reinstall the engine cover
- Align it and push straight down until it snaps into place.

- Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes. It should be smooth with no shaking.
- Take a short test drive and check for hesitation under acceleration.
- If you get a flashing check-engine light or misfire, stop driving and recheck coil connectors and plug seating.
