🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any cover fasteners present.
- Lift the cover straight upward and place it aside.
- Do not pry against a hose, wiring connector, or plastic fitting.
Step 2: Clean Around the Ignition Coils
- Use the compressed-air blow gun or soft detailing brush to remove dust around all four coils.
- Wear safety glasses and direct compressed air away from your face.
- This prevents grit from falling into the cylinders after the plugs are removed.
Step 3: Disconnect the First Ignition Coil
- Press the connector release tab with your fingers and pull the connector straight backward.
- Pull on the connector housing, not the wires.
- An ignition coil is the narrow electrical unit sitting directly above each spark plug.
- Work on one cylinder at a time. This keeps the connectors and coils organized.
Step 4: Remove the First Ignition Coil
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
- Twist the coil gently to release its rubber boot, then pull it straight upward.
- Inspect the boot for oil, coolant, cracking, or burn marks.
- Place the coil on a clean shop towel.
Step 5: Clean the Spark Plug Well
- Use the compressed-air blow gun or soft detailing brush to clean the empty well before loosening the plug.
- Do not remove the plug while loose debris remains around it.
- Dirt belongs outside the engine.
Step 6: Remove the Old Spark Plug
- Attach the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket to the 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Lower the socket straight down until it fully engages the plug.
- Turn counterclockwise slowly and keep the extension centered.
- If the plug feels unusually tight, stop and allow the engine to become completely cold.
- Lift the old plug out with the socket.
Step 7: Inspect the Old Spark Plug
- Check for heavy black carbon, wet fuel, oily deposits, a cracked insulator, or a damaged electrode.
- A single plug that looks dramatically different from the other three can point to a coil, injector, compression, or oil-control problem.
- Arrange the removed plugs in cylinder order for comparison.
Step 8: Check the New Plug
- Use the 0.70-0.75mm wire-type gap gauge to verify the gap without pressing against the fine center electrode.

Step 9: Start the New Plug by Hand
- Place the new plug in the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket.
- Use only the 6-inch extension, without the ratchet, to lower the plug into the well.
- Turn the extension clockwise by hand until the plug’s washer contacts the cylinder head.
- The plug should rotate smoothly for several full turns. If it binds, remove it and start again.
- Never use the ratchet to start the threads. Cross-threaded aluminum gets expensive fast.
Step 10: Torque the New Spark Plug
- Attach the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to the extension.

- Stop as soon as the torque wrench clicks.
- Do not add another turn after reaching the specified torque.
Step 11: Reinstall the Ignition Coil
- Inspect the coil boot and wipe away loose dirt with a clean shop towel.
- Push the coil straight over the new plug until fully seated.
- Install the coil bolt by hand before tightening it gently with the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Do not overtighten the small coil bolt. Its job is to retain the coil, not clamp the cylinder head.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until its locking tab clicks.
Step 12: Replace the Remaining Three Plugs
- Repeat Steps 3 through 11 for each remaining cylinder.
- Continue working on only one cylinder at a time.
- Torque every spark plug individually to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
- Verify that all four coil connectors are fully locked.
Step 13: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Position the cover without trapping any wiring or hoses.
- Start all fasteners by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the cover fasteners without overtightening them.
- Remove every tool and shop towel from the engine compartment.
