📋 Before You Begin
- Park your CR-V on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool for at least 1 hour if it was recently driven.
- Open the hood and remove loose debris from the top of the engine.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. A negative battery cable is the black cable marked “-”.
- Only replace one spark plug at a time so the ignition coils go back in the same positions.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Grip the plastic engine cover with both hands and pull straight upward.
- If it feels stuck, use a flat trim tool gently near the rubber mounting points.
- Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.
- Pull upward, not sideways.
Step 2: Locate the Ignition Coils
- Look across the top of the engine for four black ignition coils.
- An ignition coil is the small electrical part that sits directly above each spark plug.
- Each coil has an electrical connector and one hold-down bolt.
Step 3: Disconnect the First Ignition Coil Connector
- Start with one coil at the end of the engine.
- Press the locking tab on the connector with your thumb.
- If the connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.
- Pull the connector straight back from the ignition coil.
- Never pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the First Ignition Coil
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch 6-inch extension to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
- Twist the ignition coil slightly by hand to loosen the rubber boot.
- Pull the coil straight upward and out of the spark plug well.
- Place the coil in a clean area in the same order it was removed.
Step 5: Clean the Spark Plug Well
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt out of the spark plug well.
- A spark plug well is the deep tube where the spark plug sits.
- Use clean shop towels around the area to catch loosened debris.
- Do not skip this step; dirt can fall into the cylinder when the plug is removed.
Step 6: Remove the Old Spark Plug
- Install the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket on the 3/8-inch 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch ratchet.
- A thin-wall spark plug socket is a narrow socket that fits into the tight plug well and grips the spark plug.
- Lower the socket straight down onto the spark plug.
- Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the spark plug.
- Once loose, spin it out by hand using the extension.
- Lift the old spark plug out carefully.
- Keep the socket straight.
Step 7: Check the New Spark Plug
- Use a spark plug gap gauge to verify the gap on the new plug.
- A gap gauge measures the small space at the firing tip of the spark plug.
- The correct spark plug gap for your CR-V is 0.7-0.8 mm.
- Do not force-adjust fine-wire iridium plugs unless absolutely necessary; the tips are delicate.
- Confirm the new plug is clean, dry, and undamaged.
Step 8: Install the New Spark Plug by Hand
- Place the new spark plug into the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket.
- Lower it straight into the spark plug well using the 3/8-inch 6-inch extension.
- Turn the extension clockwise by hand only for several turns.
- If it does not turn easily, stop and restart the threads.
- Cross-threading means the plug is going in crooked and can damage the engine threads.
- Hand-start every plug first.
Step 9: Torque the New Spark Plug
- Attach the 3/8-inch torque wrench rated 10-50 Nm to the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket and 3/8-inch 6-inch extension.
- Tighten the spark plug carefully.
- Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
- Stop as soon as the torque wrench clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall the Ignition Coil
- Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease inside the end of the coil boot.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps seal the rubber boot from moisture.
- Slide the ignition coil straight down onto the new spark plug.
- Press until you feel it seat fully.
- Install the coil hold-down bolt using a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch torque wrench rated 10-50 Nm.
- Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Ignition Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the ignition coil by hand.
- Listen and feel for a click from the locking tab.
- Use needle-nose pliers only if needed, and only on the connector body.
Step 12: Repeat for the Remaining Spark Plugs
- Repeat Steps 3 through 11 for the other three spark plugs.
- Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, 3/8-inch 6-inch extension, 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket, and 3/8-inch torque wrench rated 10-50 Nm the same way for each plug.
- Work one cylinder at a time to avoid mixing parts.
Step 13: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Line up the engine cover with its rubber mounting points.
- Press straight down by hand until it seats securely.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe off any fingerprints or grease from the engine cover.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the terminal clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

- ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- ✅ The idle may be slightly uneven for a few seconds after the battery was disconnected.
- ✅ Listen for ticking, popping, or misfire sounds.
- ✅ Make sure the check engine light stays off.
- ✅ Take a short test drive with gentle acceleration first.
- ✅ Recheck that all four ignition coil connectors are fully clicked in place.
