📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Civic on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully before starting.
- Open the hood and make sure the engine cover area is clean.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- A spark plug socket is a deep socket with a rubber insert or magnet that holds the spark plug so it does not fall.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease used lightly inside the coil boot to help prevent moisture and sticking.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward.
- The cover is held by rubber grommets, so it may pop loose suddenly.
- Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.
- Pull straight up, not sideways.
Step 2: Clean Around the Ignition Coils
- Put on safety glasses.
- Use a compressed air nozzle to blow dust and grit away from the top of the engine.
- Focus around the four ignition coils before removing anything.
- The ignition coil is the small electrical part sitting on top of each spark plug.
Step 3: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connectors
- Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the first ignition coil connector.
- If the tab is stiff, gently use a small flat-blade screwdriver to help release it.
- Pull the connector straight back off the coil.
- Repeat for all four ignition coils.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to remove the hold-down bolt from each ignition coil.
- Place the four bolts in a small container so they do not get lost.
Step 5: Remove the Ignition Coils
- Grip the first ignition coil by the body.
- Twist it gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
- Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug well.
- Repeat for all four coils.
- If a coil boot sticks, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the boot edge, not the wiring.
- Lay the coils in order from left to right so they go back into the same locations.
Step 6: Blow Out the Spark Plug Wells
- Use a compressed air nozzle to blow out each spark plug well.
- The spark plug well is the deep tube where the coil was sitting.
- This prevents dirt from falling into the cylinder when the plug comes out.
Step 7: Remove the Old Spark Plugs
- Install the 5/8-inch spark plug socket onto the 3/8-inch extension 6-inch and 3/8-inch ratchet.
- Lower the socket straight down onto the first spark plug.
- Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the plug.
- Once loose, spin it out by hand using the extension.
- Lift the spark plug out carefully with the spark plug socket.
- Repeat for all four spark plugs.
- Keep the socket straight.
Step 8: Check the New Spark Plugs
- Use a spark plug gap gauge to carefully verify the gap on each new spark plug.
- For your Civic, the spark plug gap should be about 1.0-1.1 mm.
- Most iridium plugs come pre-gapped. Do not forcefully pry on the tiny center electrode.
- Do not apply anti-seize unless the spark plug manufacturer specifically says to. Many modern plugs already have coated threads.
Step 9: Install the New Spark Plugs by Hand
- Place one new spark plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket.
- Lower it straight into the spark plug well using the 3/8-inch extension 6-inch.
- Thread it clockwise by hand only for the first several turns.
- If it does not turn smoothly, stop and back it out. This prevents cross-threading.
- Repeat for all four spark plugs.
Step 10: Torque the Spark Plugs
- Attach the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch.
- Tighten each spark plug to Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Do not add extra tightening after the torque wrench clicks.
- One click is enough.
Step 11: Reinstall the Ignition Coils
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the end of each ignition coil boot.
- Push each ignition coil straight down onto its spark plug until fully seated.
- Make sure each coil returns to its original position.
Step 12: Reinstall the Ignition Coil Bolts
- Start each coil bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to snug the bolts.
- Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive with the 10mm socket to tighten each bolt to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Reconnect the Coil Connectors
- Push each electrical connector onto its ignition coil until it clicks.
- Use your fingers to gently tug each connector to confirm it is locked.
Step 14: Reinstall the Engine Cover and Battery Cable
- Line up the engine cover with its rubber mounting points.
- Press down firmly by hand until the cover snaps into place.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten the battery terminal snugly. Do not crush the terminal.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Civic and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- The engine should idle smoothly with no shaking or flashing check engine light.
- If the engine runs rough, shut it off and recheck that all four ignition coil connectors are fully clicked in.
- Take a short test drive and confirm smooth acceleration.
- If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and any saved radio/audio settings if needed.
