📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Ignition Coils
- Use your hands to open the hood and support it securely.
- Look at the top of the engine. You will see 4 ignition coils in a row.
- Each ignition coil sits directly above one spark plug.
- Work on one plug at a time.
Step 2: Clean Around the First Ignition Coil
- Put on safety glasses.
- Use the compressed air blow gun to blow dirt away from the first ignition coil area.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe away remaining dust or grit.
- This helps prevent debris from falling into the engine when the spark plug is removed.
Step 3: Disconnect the Ignition Coil Connector
- Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the ignition coil electrical connector.
- Pull the connector straight back from the coil.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- If the connector is stubborn, gently wiggle the plastic connector body by hand.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the ignition coil hold-down bolt.
- Pull the ignition coil straight upward by hand.
- If it feels stuck, gently twist it left and right while pulling upward.
- Set the coil somewhere clean and dry.
Step 5: Blow Out the Spark Plug Well
- Use the compressed air blow gun to blow debris out of the spark plug well.
- The spark plug well is the deep tube where the spark plug sits.
- Keep your face away from the well while using compressed air.
Step 6: Remove the Old Spark Plug
- Use the 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Turn the spark plug counterclockwise to loosen it.
- Once loose, keep turning slowly until the plug comes free.
- Lift the old spark plug out carefully with the spark plug socket.
- If the plug feels very tight, stop and tighten it slightly, then loosen again slowly.
Step 7: Inspect and Prepare the New Spark Plug
- Compare the new spark plug to the old one using your eyes. The length and thread area should match.
- Do not adjust the gap on pre-gapped iridium plugs unless the gap is clearly incorrect.
- The correct spark plug gap is typically 0.043-0.044 inch.
- Do not put anti-seize on the threads.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the ignition coil boot only. Dielectric grease is non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out of electrical boots.
Step 8: Start the New Spark Plug by Hand
- Place the new spark plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket.
- Use only the 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension by hand at first.
- Turn the spark plug clockwise slowly until it threads in smoothly.
- It should spin in easily for several turns.
- If it feels rough or stops quickly, remove it and start again.
- Hand-starting prevents costly thread damage.
Step 9: Torque the New Spark Plug
- Attach the torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs to the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension.
- Tighten the spark plug to Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten.
Step 10: Reinstall the Ignition Coil
- Push the ignition coil straight down over the new spark plug by hand.
- Make sure the coil boot seats fully onto the spark plug.
- Install the coil hold-down bolt using the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension.
- Tighten the ignition coil bolt to Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Ignition Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil by hand.
- Listen or feel for a click.
- Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 12: Repeat for the Other 3 Spark Plugs
- Use the same process with the 10mm socket, 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs.
- Replace one spark plug at a time from front to back.
- Keep each ignition coil connector matched to its original coil location.
Step 13: Final Check Before Starting
- Use your eyes and hands to confirm all 4 ignition coil connectors are plugged in.
- Use the 10mm socket only if any coil bolt needs a final check.
- Remove all tools, towels, and old spark plugs from the engine bay.
