๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Grip the sides of the plastic engine cover with gloved hands and pull upward to release its rubber retainers.
- Lift the cover away and place it somewhere clean.
- If the air-intake duct restricts access, loosen its clamps with an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver, disconnect the attached breather fitting, and move the duct aside.
- Photograph each connection before moving it.
Step 2: Locate the Ignition Coils
- Find the four ignition coils along each valve cover. Each coil connects to a spark plug through a short rubber boot and wire.
- Start with an easily accessible front cylinder so you can learn the process before reaching the rear plugs.
- Use the compressed-air blow gun with air compressor to remove dirt from around the coil boot and spark-plug area.
- Wear safety glasses and direct debris away from your face.
Step 3: Disconnect One Ignition Coil
- Release the electrical connector lock with your fingers, then press the connector tab and pull on the connector bodyโnot the wires.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
- Move the coil enough to access its plug wire. Twist the rubber boot gently, then pull it straight off the spark plug.
- Do not pull directly on the ignition wire.
Step 4: Clean the Spark-Plug Area
- Use the small clean nylon brush to loosen debris around the plug.
- Use the compressed-air blow gun with air compressor again until the recess is clean.
- This prevents grit from entering the cylinder after the spark plug is removed.
Step 5: Remove the Old Spark Plug
- Fit the 5/8-inch spark-plug socket over the plug. This socket has an internal insert that holds the plug securely.
- Attach the 6-inch 3/8-inch drive extension and 3/8-inch drive ratchet, then turn counterclockwise.
- Use the 3-inch 3/8-inch drive extension where space is limited.
- For a rear plug, add the 3/8-inch drive universal joint. This is a hinged adapter that lets the socket work at a slight angle.
- Once loose, spin the plug out slowly. Use the magnetic pickup tool if the plug separates from the socket.
- If the plug requires excessive force, stop and apply a small amount of penetrating oil around its seat. Allow it to soak before trying again on the cold engine.
Step 6: Inspect and Check the New Spark Plug
- Compare the old and new plugs to verify matching thread length, seat style, and terminal shape.
- Use the 0.040-inch wire-style spark-plug gap gauge to verify 1.0mm (0.040 inch).
- Do not force a flat wedge gauge between delicate iridium electrodes.
- Do not install a plug with cracked porcelain, damaged threads, or a bent center electrode.
- Leave the threads clean and dry. Do not use anti-seize compound.
Step 7: Install the New Spark Plug by Hand
- Place the plug into the 5/8-inch spark-plug socket and attach only the 6-inch 3/8-inch drive extension.
- Lower the plug into the cylinder head and turn the extension clockwise by hand for several complete turns.
- If it does not turn smoothly, remove it and start again. Never use the ratchet to start the threads.
- Hand-starting prevents costly crossed threads.
Step 8: Tighten the New Spark Plug
- Attach the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench rated 10-80 ft-lbs to the extension and spark-plug socket.
- Tighten the plug to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Keep the socket aligned with the plug while tightening.
- Do not tighten beyond specification; the cylinder head is aluminum.
Step 9: Reinstall the Coil Boot and Coil
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric ignition grease inside the opening of the rubber boot using a gloved fingertip. Keep grease away from the metal electrical contact.
- Push the boot firmly onto the spark plug until it is fully seated.
- Position the ignition coil and start its bolt by hand.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench rated 10-80 ft-lbs with the 10mm socket to tighten the coil bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs). Set the wrench to approximately 8 ft-lbs if it does not display inch-pounds.
- Reconnect the coil electrical connector until its lock clicks into place.
Step 10: Replace the Remaining Seven Spark Plugs
- Repeat Steps 2 through 9 on one cylinder at a time.
- Use the 3-inch 3/8-inch drive extension, 6-inch 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive universal joint in the combination that keeps the socket straight.
- Approach the rear passenger-side plug carefully because heater hoses and the firewall reduce working room.
- Do not pry against air-conditioning lines, heater hoses, wiring, or the brake booster.
Step 11: Reassemble the Intake and Engine Cover
- If removed, reinstall the intake duct and reconnect its breather fitting by hand.
- Use the 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake clamps until secure without crushing the plastic duct.
- Align the engine-cover retainers and press the cover down firmly with gloved hands.
- Use the magnetic pickup tool to retrieve any dropped fasteners before starting the engine.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Check that all eight ignition-coil connectors, coil boots, and intake connections are secure.
- ๐ Start the engine and let it idle. It should run smoothly without shaking or flashing the check-engine light.
