📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Suburban on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
• ❄️ Allow the engine to cool for at least two hours. Overnight cooling is preferable.
• 🛡️ Place the fender cover over the passenger-side fender because the rear plugs require a long reach.
• 🔋 Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal. Remove it and position it where it cannot touch the battery post.
• 📏 Check every replacement plug with the 0.040-inch wire-style gap gauge. Do not forcefully bend the fine iridium center electrode.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the Spark Plug Locations

• 🔎 Locate the four ignition coils along each side of the engine. Each coil connects to a spark plug through a short insulated wire and rubber boot.
• The spark plug boot is the rubber end that seals around the spark plug.
• Work on only one cylinder at a time so the ignition wires cannot be mixed up.

Step 2: Disconnect One Ignition Wire

• 🧰 Grip the first rubber boot with the spark plug boot pliers. Do not pull on the wire itself.
• Twist the boot gently to break its seal, then pull it straight away from the spark plug.
• Use the 90-degree pick tool only around the outer edge if the boot is stuck. Do not puncture the rubber.
• Twist first, then pull the boot.

Step 3: Clean Around the Spark Plug

• 💨 Put on safety glasses and use the compressed-air blow gun at no more than 90 PSI to remove dirt from around the plug.
• Keep your face away from the plug opening while blowing out debris.
• This prevents grit from falling into the cylinder after the plug is removed.

Step 4: Remove the Old Spark Plug

• 🔩 Fit the 5/8-inch spark plug socket to the 3-inch or 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
• Use the universal-joint adapter where the exhaust manifold or body limits straight access, especially near the rear cylinders.
• Turn the spark plug counterclockwise until it is completely free, then lift it out with the spark plug socket.
• If the plug requires excessive force, stop and apply gentle back-and-forth movement. Forcing it can damage the cylinder-head threads.

Step 5: Inspect the Old Spark Plug and Boot

• 🔍 Check the old plug for heavy oil, wet fuel, cracked ceramic, or a damaged electrode.
• Inspect the ignition boot for splits, burn marks, or white tracking lines. Tracking lines indicate that voltage has been escaping through the boot.
• Replace the ignition-coil boot if it is brittle, torn, swollen, or electrically tracked.

Step 6: Check the New Spark Plug

• 📏 Use the 0.040-inch wire-style spark plug gap gauge to verify a 0.040-inch gap.
• Inspect the ceramic insulator and threads for shipping damage.
• Do not apply anti-seize compound to the plug threads.

Step 7: Install the New Spark Plug by Hand

• ✋ Insert the new plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket attached to the 6-inch extension, but do not attach the ratchet yet.
• Lower the plug carefully into the cylinder head and turn the extension clockwise by hand for several complete rotations.
• The plug should turn smoothly. If it binds, remove it and start again to prevent cross-threading, which means cutting the threads at the wrong angle.

Step 8: Tighten the New Spark Plug

• 🔧 Attach the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to the extension and spark plug socket.
• Tighten the spark plug to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
• Keep the extension as straight as possible while tightening. Do not continue turning after the torque wrench clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the Ignition Boot

• 🧴 Apply a very small amount of dielectric silicone grease inside the opening of the rubber boot. Keep grease off the spark plug threads and metal terminal.
• Push the boot straight onto the spark plug by hand until it seats firmly and you feel or hear a click.
• Give the wire a gentle tug at the boot to confirm it is locked in place.

Step 10: Replace the Remaining Seven Spark Plugs

• 🔁 Repeat Steps 2 through 9 for each remaining cylinder using the same tools.
• Use the 6-inch extension and universal-joint adapter for the rear plugs where clearance is limited.
• Confirm each boot is returned to the same cylinder before moving to the next plug.
• Take breaks before tackling the rear plugs.

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

• 🔋 Clean the negative battery terminal with the battery-terminal brush if corrosion is present.
• Place the negative terminal fully onto the battery post.
• Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal fastener to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten the terminal because the battery post can be damaged.

• ✅ Check both sides of the engine for tools, disconnected wires, or loose boots before starting.
• 🚙 Start your Suburban and let it idle for several minutes. The engine should run smoothly without shaking or flashing the check-engine light.
• 👂 Listen for a sharp ticking sound that could indicate a loose spark plug or an ignition boot that is not fully seated.
• ⚠️ If the check-engine light flashes, shut off the engine immediately and recheck every ignition-wire connection.
• 🛣️ Take a gentle 10-15 minute test drive, then verify that the idle remains smooth.
• 🕒 The clock and saved settings may require restoration after the battery disconnect.
