🔧 Tucson - Spark Plug Replacement

On your Tucson, the spark plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of the engine. Replacing them restores smooth starting, idle quality, and fuel economy, and helps prevent misfires.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns and thread damage in the cylinder head.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes; debris can fall into the cylinder.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets and clock settings.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3", 6")
  • 16mm spark plug socket (rubber insert or магнит insert)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10–60 Nm range)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs (OEM-spec, iridium) - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely (at least 1 hour after driving).
  • Optional but safer: disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Lift the plastic engine cover straight up (it’s held by rubber grommets). Use your hands; if it’s stuck, gently work it side-to-side.
  • Set it aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 2: Unplug the ignition coils

  • Locate the 4 ignition coils along the top of the engine.
  • Press the electrical connector tab and pull the connector off each coil. If it’s stubborn, gently help the tab with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Do one coil at a time to stay organized.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coils

  • Remove each coil retaining bolt using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Pull the coil straight up and out. A small twist helps break the seal.
  • Set coils aside in order (cylinder 1–4).
  • During reassembly: Torque to 9–11 Nm (80–97 in-lb) for the coil bolts.

Step 4: Blow out the spark plug wells

  • Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt/leaves out of each spark plug hole before removal.
  • Wipe around the openings with shop rags.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Install a 16mm spark plug socket on a 3/8" drive extension and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Lower it straight down onto the plug and loosen counterclockwise.
  • Lift the plug out with the socket (the insert helps grip the plug).
  • If it feels stuck, stop and recheck alignment.

Step 6: Install the new spark plugs

  • Check that each new plug looks identical to the old one and that the threads are clean.
  • Do not use anti-seize unless the plug manufacturer specifically says to; most modern plugs are nickel-plated and don’t require it.
  • Start threading the new plug by hand using the 16mm spark plug socket and extension only (no ratchet at first). This helps prevent cross-threading (damaging the threads).
  • Once it seats, tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 18–22 Nm (13–16 ft-lb).

Step 7: Reinstall coils and connectors

  • Put a small dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber spark plug “cup”). It helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Push each coil straight down until fully seated.
  • Install coil bolts using a 10mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 9–11 Nm (80–97 in-lb).
  • Reconnect each coil electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Align the cover with the mounting points and press down firmly until it snaps into place.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds. It should run smooth with no shaking.
  • If the check engine light is on or it runs rough, recheck that every coil connector is fully clicked in.
  • Test drive 5–10 minutes and confirm no hesitation under light acceleration.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$120 (parts only)

You Save: $130-$410 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
