🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

• Grip the engine cover near its mounting points and pull upward evenly to release its rubber retainers.
• Use the plastic trim removal tool only if a retainer needs gentle assistance.
• Set the cover away from the work area.

Step 2: Inspect the Plug Layout

• Locate the four ignition coils along each valve cover and the short wire running from each coil to its spark plug.
• Replace one plug completely before moving to the next cylinder.
• Start with the easiest front plug to learn the process before tackling the tight rear cylinders.

Step 3: Remove One Spark Plug Wire

• Use the spark plug boot puller to grip the boot at the spark plug end.
• Twist the boot gently to break its seal, then pull it straight from the plug.
• Do not pull on the wire itself.
• Inspect the wire and boot for burns, splits, hardening, oil contamination, or white tracking marks.
• Twist first, then pull the boot.

Step 4: Clean Around the Spark Plug

• Put on safety glasses.
• Use the compressed-air blow gun at no more than 90 psi to clear dirt from around the plug.
• Keep your face away from the plug well while blowing it clean.
• Do not remove the plug until the surrounding area is clean.

Step 5: Remove the Old Spark Plug

• Fit the 5/8-inch magnetic spark plug socket over the plug.
• Use the 3/8-inch ratchet with the shortest extension that provides clear access.
• Add the universal joint for a rear plug only when straight access is unavailable.
• Turn counterclockwise slowly until the plug is loose, then remove it by hand with the extension and socket.
• If the plug binds after initially loosening, stop and turn it slightly inward before carefully working it outward.

Step 6: Inspect the Old Plug

• Check for a light tan or gray firing tip, which normally indicates healthy combustion.
• Look for wet fuel, heavy black carbon, oily deposits, a cracked insulator, or a badly worn electrode.
• Keep the old plugs arranged by cylinder position if you notice unusual deposits. Their condition can help identify a cylinder-specific problem.

Step 7: Verify the New Plug

• Use the 0.040-inch wire-style gap gauge to confirm 0.040 inch (1.0 mm).
• Inspect the ceramic insulator for shipping cracks.
• Confirm the sealing seat and threads are clean and undamaged.
• Do not pry against the fine-wire center electrode when checking the gap.

Step 8: Hand-Start the New Spark Plug

• Place the new plug into the 5/8-inch magnetic spark plug socket.
• Use only the extension and your fingers to turn the plug clockwise several complete turns.
• Stop immediately if the plug does not turn smoothly. Remove it and start again.
• Do not use the ratchet until the plug is fully threaded by hand.
• Smooth by hand means correctly threaded.

Step 9: Torque the New Spark Plug

• Attach the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to the extension and socket.
• Tighten the dry, clean tapered-seat plug to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
• Stop as soon as the torque wrench clicks.
• Do not add another pull after the click. The cylinder head is aluminum.

Step 10: Reinstall the Spark Plug Wire

• Apply a small film of dielectric grease inside the mouth of the spark plug boot. Keep grease off the metal terminal and plug threads.
• Push the boot straight onto the plug until the terminal snaps firmly into place.
• Route the wire exactly as it was installed and keep it away from the exhaust manifold.
• Gently tug the boot to confirm it is locked onto the plug.

Step 11: Replace the Remaining Seven Plugs

• Repeat Steps 3 through 10 for each cylinder.
• Use the 3-inch extension where space allows and the 6-inch extension with universal joint where access is restricted.
• Work patiently around the passenger-side rear cylinder. Remove only brackets or shields that clearly block straight tool access.
• Confirm every plug wire is fully seated before moving to the next cylinder.

Step 12: Reassemble the Engine Bay

• Check both sides of the engine for forgotten tools, loose wires, and displaced heat shields.
• Align the engine cover with its mounting points and press it down evenly by hand.
• Use the 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery terminal securely.
