Replacing the spark plugs on your Tucson helps restore smooth starting, good fuel economy, and proper engine performance. The 2.4L engine uses one ignition coil per cylinder, and the plugs are accessed from the top of the engine after removing the engine cover.

  • ⚠️ Work only on a completely cool engine; aluminum cylinder head threads can be damaged when hot.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils.
  • ⚠️ Do not drop dirt into the spark plug wells; debris can fall into the engine.
  • ⚠️ Do not use anti-seize unless the spark plug maker specifically requires it; many modern plugs are pre-coated.
  • ⚠️ Do not over-tighten spark plugs; the cylinder head is aluminum and the threads can strip.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tucson on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 1 hour if it was recently driven.
  • Open the hood and remove loose items from the engine bay.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Check each new spark plug for shipping damage before installation.
  • The factory-style iridium plugs should be pre-gapped; do not force the electrode with the gap tool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Grip the plastic engine cover with both hands.
  • Pull straight upward to release it from the rubber mounting grommets.
  • Set the cover aside on a clean towel.
  • Pull upward, not sideways.

Step 2: Clean around the ignition coils

  • Put on safety glasses.
  • Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dust and grit away from the top of the engine.
  • Wipe the area around each ignition coil with clean shop towels.
  • An ignition coil is the small electrical part that sits above each spark plug and sends high voltage to it.

Step 3: Unplug the ignition coil connectors

  • Press the locking tab on the first ignition coil connector with your thumb.
  • If the tab is hard to press, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.
  • Pull the connector straight back off the coil.
  • Repeat for all 4 ignition coils.
  • Never pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the coil hold-down bolt from each ignition coil.
  • Twist each coil gently by hand to loosen the rubber boot.
  • Pull each coil straight upward and set it aside in cylinder order.
  • Keeping them in order helps avoid mixing up a weak coil during future diagnosis.

Step 5: Blow out the spark plug wells

  • Use a compressed air blow gun to clean inside each spark plug well.
  • A spark plug well is the deep tube where the spark plug sits.
  • Make sure no dirt, leaves, or grit remain before removing the plugs.

Step 6: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Install the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket onto the 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
  • Lower the socket straight down onto the first spark plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the plug.
  • Once loose, spin it out by hand using the extension.
  • Lift the old spark plug out carefully.
  • Repeat for all 4 spark plugs.
  • If a plug feels stuck, tighten it slightly, loosen again, and work slowly.
  • Do not force stuck plugs.

Step 7: Inspect and check the new spark plugs

  • Use a spark plug gap gauge to lightly verify the new plug gap.
  • The correct gap for your Tucson is typically 1.0-1.1 mm 0.039-0.043 in.
  • Do not pry against the fine iridium center electrode.
  • Replace any plug that is cracked, bent, or dropped.

Step 8: Install the new spark plugs by hand

  • Place one new iridium spark plug into the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket.
  • Lower it straight into the spark plug well using the 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension.
  • Turn clockwise by hand only for several turns.
  • If it does not thread smoothly, stop and back it out.
  • Repeat for all 4 spark plugs.
  • Hand-starting prevents cross-threading.

Step 9: Torque the spark plugs

  • Attach the torque wrench rated 5-50 ft-lbs to the 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket.
  • Tighten each spark plug to Torque to 25 Nm 18 ft-lbs.
  • Keep the socket straight while tightening.
  • Do not add extra tightening after the torque wrench clicks.

Step 10: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a small pea-sized amount of dielectric grease inside the end of each ignition coil boot.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps seal out moisture around the rubber boot.
  • Push each ignition coil straight down onto its spark plug until seated.
  • Install each coil bolt using a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
  • Tighten each ignition coil bolt to Torque to 10 Nm 89 in-lbs.

Step 11: Reconnect the ignition coil connectors

  • Push each electrical connector onto its ignition coil by hand.
  • Listen or feel for the connector lock to click into place.
  • Lightly tug each connector to confirm it is secure.

Step 12: Reinstall the engine cover and battery cable

  • Line up the engine cover with the rubber mounting grommets.
  • Press the cover straight down by hand until it seats fully.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the battery terminal snugly; do not crush the terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Tucson and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • The idle should become smooth after a few seconds.
  • Check that the check engine light stays off.
  • Listen for clicking, popping, or misfire sounds.
  • Take a short test drive and verify smooth acceleration.
  • If the engine shakes or the check engine light flashes, stop driving and recheck the coil connectors.
  • Some clock or radio settings may need to be reset after the battery was disconnected.
