Replacing the spark plugs on your F-150 helps restore smooth starts, clean idle, fuel economy, and proper turbocharged engine performance. The 2.7L EcoBoost uses individual ignition coils on top of each spark plug, so you’ll remove each coil, replace the plug underneath, then reinstall everything carefully.

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before starting; spark plugs thread into aluminum cylinder heads and can be damaged if removed hot.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils to reduce the chance of electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells; debris can fall into the engine when the plug is removed.
  • ⚠️ Do not force a spark plug into the threads. Cross-threading means the plug is going in crooked and can damage the cylinder head.
  • ⚠️ Replace all six spark plugs as a set for even ignition performance.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Use a fender cover to protect the paint while leaning into the engine bay.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • Check the new spark plug gaps before installation. For the 2.7L EcoBoost, set each plug to approximately 0.030 inch unless the plug manufacturer specifies otherwise.
  • A spark plug gap gauge measures the small space between the center electrode and ground strap where the spark jumps.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover

  • Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward from the rubber mounting points.
  • If it feels stuck, gently rock it side to side while pulling upward.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.
  • Pull evenly, not from one corner.

Step 2: Remove Intake Tubing for Access

  • Use a 7mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air intake tube clamps.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps connected to the intake tube.
  • Disconnect any attached sensor connectors by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back.
  • Lift the intake tube out of the way and place it aside.
  • Cover open intake openings with a clean rag so nothing falls inside.

Step 3: Locate the Ignition Coils

  • Find the six ignition coils, one above each spark plug.
  • An ignition coil is the small electrical part that sends high voltage to the spark plug.
  • There are three coils on each side of the V6 engine.
  • Work on one spark plug at a time so parts do not get mixed up.

Step 4: Disconnect the First Ignition Coil Connector

  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the electrical connector lock tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off the ignition coil.
  • Do not pull on the wires themselves.
  • If the connector is stubborn, use the flat-blade screwdriver only to lift the tab slightly.

Step 5: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and extension to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
  • Put the bolt in a small container so it does not fall into the engine bay.
  • Pull the ignition coil upward with a gentle twisting motion.
  • If the rubber boot sticks to the spark plug, use needle-nose pliers carefully to remove it.

Step 6: Clean the Spark Plug Well

  • Put on safety glasses before using compressed air.
  • Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt and grit out of the spark plug well.
  • The spark plug well is the deep tube where the plug sits.
  • This step is important because dirt can fall into the cylinder after the plug is removed.

Step 7: Remove the Old Spark Plug

  • Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the spark plug.
  • A spark plug socket has a rubber insert or magnet that holds the plug while lifting it out.
  • Turn counterclockwise slowly until the plug is free.
  • Lift the plug out carefully using the spark plug socket.
  • If the plug drops from the socket, use a magnetic pickup tool to retrieve it.

Step 8: Inspect and Prepare the New Spark Plug

  • Use a spark plug gap gauge to confirm the new plug gap is about 0.030 inch.
  • Apply a very small amount of anti-seize compound to the spark plug threads only if the spark plug manufacturer allows it.
  • Many modern iridium plugs have plated threads and do not require anti-seize.
  • Do not get anti-seize on the plug tip or electrode.
  • Less is better with anti-seize.

Step 9: Install the New Spark Plug by Hand First

  • Place the new spark plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket.
  • Use only the extension and your hand to thread the plug clockwise into the cylinder head.
  • Do not use the ratchet yet.
  • If it does not turn smoothly, back it out and start again.
  • Once finger-tight, attach the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench.
  • Tighten the spark plug to Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Service and Reinstall the Ignition Coil

  • Inspect the ignition coil boot for cracks, oil, carbon tracking, or swelling.
  • Replace the ignition coil boot if worn or damaged.
  • Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside the end of the coil boot.
  • Dielectric grease helps seal out moisture but does not conduct electricity.
  • Push the ignition coil straight down onto the new spark plug until seated.
  • Use the 8mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the ignition coil bolt to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Repeat for the Remaining Five Spark Plugs

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 10 for each remaining ignition coil and spark plug.
  • Use the 3-inch extension and 3/8-inch drive universal joint where access is tight near the firewall.
  • A universal joint is a flexible socket adapter that lets the socket turn at an angle.
  • Keep the socket straight on the spark plug whenever possible to avoid cracking the plug.
  • Work slowly on the rear plugs because space is tighter.

Step 12: Reinstall the Intake Tubing

  • Remove any clean rags from the intake openings.
  • Set the intake tube back into position.
  • Reconnect any hoses using needle-nose pliers for spring clamps if needed.
  • Reconnect any sensor connectors until they click.
  • Use the 7mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake tube clamps snugly.
  • Do not overtighten plastic intake parts.

Step 13: Reinstall the Engine Cover and Battery Cable

  • Press the engine cover straight down onto its rubber mounting points by hand.
  • Use the 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the battery terminal nut snugly to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
  • Make sure the cable does not rotate on the battery post.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Listen for smooth idle and confirm there are no misfires, ticking sounds, or hissing air leaks.
  • If the engine runs rough, shut it off and recheck each ignition coil connector and intake hose connection.
  • Take a short test drive with light throttle first, then moderate throttle once the engine feels normal.
  • If the check engine light was on before the repair, use a compatible scan tool to clear codes after confirming the engine runs correctly.
