📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Colorado on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm battery terminal wrench.
- A spark plug socket has a rubber insert or magnet that holds the plug so it does not fall while removing or installing it.
- A torque wrench tightens bolts or plugs to a measured amount so parts are not too loose or too tight.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease used inside ignition coil boots to help seal out moisture and prevent sticking.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Lift the plastic engine cover upward by hand if equipped.
- If fasteners are fitted, use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove them.
- Set the cover aside on a clean surface.
- Take a quick photo first.
Step 2: Clean Around the Ignition Coils
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt away from the top of the engine around the ignition coils.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe loose dirt from the coil area.
- This prevents debris from falling into the engine when the spark plugs are removed.
Step 3: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connectors
- Each spark plug has one ignition coil above it.
- Press the connector locking tab by hand and pull the connector straight back.
- If a connector is stubborn, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.
- Do not yank on the wiring harness.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coils
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, 6-inch, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the ignition coil retaining bolts.
- Pull each ignition coil straight upward by hand with a slight twist.
- Place the coils in order from front to rear so each one can go back in the same position.
- Torque for coil bolts during installation: 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
Step 5: Clean the Spark Plug Wells
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow out each spark plug well before removing the plugs.
- A spark plug well is the deep tube where the spark plug sits.
- Keep your face away from the well while blowing air.
- Dirt inside the engine is bad news.
Step 6: Remove the Old Spark Plugs
- Install the 5/8-inch spark plug socket onto the 3/8-inch drive extension, 6-inch and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Lower the socket straight down onto the first spark plug.
- Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the plug.
- Remove the plug carefully and lift it out using the spark plug socket.
- Repeat for all four spark plugs.
Step 7: Check the New Spark Plugs
- Use a spark plug gap gauge to verify each new spark plug gap.
- For the Colorado 2.5L, use the plug manufacturer’s pre-set iridium plug specification and do not forcefully bend the fine iridium tip.
- Inspect each plug to make sure the porcelain is not cracked and the threads are clean.
- Do not apply anti-seize unless the spark plug manufacturer specifically requires it. Most modern iridium plugs already have plated threads.
Step 8: Install the New Spark Plugs by Hand
- Place one new spark plug into the 5/8-inch spark plug socket.
- Attach the socket to the 3/8-inch drive extension, 6-inch, but do not attach the ratchet yet.
- Lower the spark plug straight into the well.
- Turn the extension clockwise by hand until the plug is fully seated finger-tight.
- If it feels tight right away, stop and restart. It may be cross-threaded.
- Hand-starting protects the cylinder head.
Step 9: Torque the Spark Plugs
- Attach a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench, inch-pound or low-range foot-pound to the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and 3/8-inch drive extension, 6-inch.
- Tighten each spark plug evenly.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs)
- Do not add extra tightening after the torque wrench clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall the Ignition Coils
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the tip of each ignition coil boot.
- Push each ignition coil straight down onto its spark plug until fully seated.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, 6-inch, and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench, inch-pound or low-range foot-pound to tighten the coil bolts.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
Step 11: Reconnect the Coil Connectors
- Push each ignition coil electrical connector on by hand until it clicks.
- Gently tug each connector by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Use needle-nose pliers only if a connector lock needs gentle help seating.
Step 12: Reinstall the Engine Cover and Battery Cable
- Reinstall the engine cover by hand.
- If fasteners were removed, use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug them.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm battery terminal wrench.
- Make sure the battery terminal is tight and does not rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Colorado and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- Listen for smooth idle. A rough idle usually means a coil connector is loose or a coil is not fully seated.
- Check that the check engine light is not flashing.
- Take a short test drive and accelerate gently at first.
- If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and any saved radio presets if needed.
- If a misfire code returns, recheck the ignition coil connectors and coil seating before replacing more parts.
