šŸ”§ Altima - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing a side view mirror on your Altima means removing the front door trim panel enough to access the mirror mounting nuts and electrical connector. The mirror assembly is then unbolted from the door and replaced as a complete unit.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes per side

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the mirror connector to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • āš ļø Wear safety glasses and gloves. Door trim clips can pop loose suddenly.
  • āš ļø Support the mirror with one hand while removing the final nut so it does not fall and scratch the paint.
  • āš ļø Do not pry against painted surfaces with metal tools.
  • āš ļø If your replacement mirror includes a blind-spot indicator, confirm it matches your original mirror equipment before installation.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet wrench
  • 6-inch socket extension
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Panel clip remover
  • Torque wrench inch-pound range
  • Painter’s tape 2-inch width
  • Microfiber towel
  • Cut-resistant gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly - Qty: 1 per side
  • Front door trim panel clips - Qty: 4-8 recommended

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Altima on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Lower the front door window. This gives more room to hold the mirror and door panel safely.
  • Place a microfiber towel over the painted door edge near the mirror area.
  • Apply painter’s tape 2-inch width around the outside mirror base if the painted area is close to the mirror housing.
  • A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool used to release interior panels without scratching them.
  • A panel clip remover is a fork-shaped tool that pulls plastic clips straight out so they are less likely to break.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket before unplugging mirror wiring.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Move the cable away from the battery post so it cannot touch the battery while you work.

Step 2: Protect the Paint

  • Use painter’s tape 2-inch width around the outside base of the side mirror.
  • Place a microfiber towel along the top of the door trim and outer door edge.
  • Tip: Tape prevents accidental scratches.

Step 3: Remove the Interior Mirror Trim Cover

  • At the inside front corner of the door, locate the small triangular trim cover behind the mirror.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the trim cover away from the door.
  • Pull it straight outward by hand after the clips release.
  • If a small connector or tweeter speaker is attached, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector tab and unplug it.

Step 4: Remove the Window Switch Trim

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to lift the front window switch trim from the armrest.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock tab.
  • Unplug the switch connector by pulling the connector body, not the wires.

Step 5: Remove Door Panel Screws

  • Check the pull handle area and behind small trim caps for door panel screws.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the front door panel screws.
  • Keep the screws together in a safe place.

Step 6: Release the Door Panel Clips

  • Insert a panel clip remover or plastic trim removal tool between the lower edge of the door panel and the metal door shell.
  • Pop the clips loose one at a time along the bottom and sides.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Support the panel while disconnecting any remaining connectors with a small flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 7: Disconnect the Inside Handle Cable

  • Look behind the door panel for the inside handle cable.
  • Unclip the cable housing by hand.
  • Rotate the cable end out of the handle lever using your fingers or the small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Set the door panel on a clean surface.

Step 8: Unplug the Mirror Connector

  • Follow the mirror wiring harness from the mirror area into the door.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock tab.
  • Unplug the side mirror connector by pulling straight out on the connector body.

Step 9: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts

  • Support the outside mirror with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and ratchet wrench to remove the mirror mounting nuts from inside the door.
  • Remove the lower nuts first and the upper nut last while holding the mirror securely.
  • Tip: Do not drop nuts inside the door.

Step 10: Remove the Old Mirror

  • From outside the door, gently pull the mirror away from the door.
  • Guide the wiring harness through the door opening by hand.
  • If the mirror gasket sticks, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently separate it from the door.
  • Do not use a metal screwdriver on the painted door surface.

Step 11: Install the New Mirror

  • Feed the new mirror wiring harness through the door opening by hand.
  • Seat the mirror gasket flat against the outside of the door.
  • Hold the mirror in place with one hand.
  • Start the mirror mounting nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench to snug the nuts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench inch-pound range with a 10mm socket to tighten the mirror nuts to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 12: Connect and Test the Mirror

  • Plug in the mirror connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the window switch connector by hand.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the mirror switch to test left, right, up, and down adjustment.
  • If equipped, test mirror heat with the rear defroster button.
  • If equipped, verify blind-spot indicator operation during the next road test.

Step 13: Reinstall the Door Panel

  • Turn the ignition OFF.
  • Reconnect the inside handle cable by hand.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors by hand until they click.
  • Hang the upper door panel lip over the window ledge.
  • Line up the door panel clips with the holes in the door.
  • Press around the panel edges by hand to snap the clips into place.
  • Replace any broken clips with front door trim panel clips.

Step 14: Reinstall Screws and Trim Covers

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the front door panel screws.
  • Snap the window switch trim back into the armrest by hand.
  • Reconnect any tweeter connector by hand, if equipped.
  • Snap the triangular mirror trim cover back into place by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to confirm the negative battery terminal is tight.
  • Battery terminal clamp should be snug, not crushed. Typical clamp torque is Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • āœ… Test mirror adjustment in all directions from the driver switch.
  • āœ… Test power windows and door locks on the repaired door.
  • āœ… Check that the inside door handle opens the door correctly.
  • āœ… Confirm the mirror gasket sits flat with no gaps.
  • āœ… Check for wind noise on a short road test.
  • āœ… If the mirror glass has manual folding, fold and unfold it gently to confirm proper seating.
