🔧 1500 - Side View Mirror Replacement

This repair replaces a complete outside side view mirror assembly on your 1500. The front door trim panel must be removed to access the mirror wiring connector and mounting nuts inside the door.

📋 Before You Begin

• 🔋 Turn the ignition off, remove the key fob from the cab, and wait at least 2 minutes for the body control modules to go to sleep.
• 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative 12V battery cable and position it away from the battery post.
• 🪞 Fold the mirror inward if possible to make it easier to handle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect the Door Paint

• Use 2-inch painter’s tape around the outside mirror base where it meets the door.
• Place a clean microfiber towel below the mirror area to protect the paint if the mirror shifts.
• Tape prevents accidental scratches.

Step 2: Remove the Front Door Switch Trim

• Use a plastic pry tool to gently lift the window switch trim from the armrest.
• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the electrical connector locks.
• Unplug the switch connectors by hand and set the switch trim aside.

Step 3: Remove Hidden Door Panel Screws

• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or pick tool to remove the small trim covers in the pull handle and interior handle area.
• Use a 7mm socket with ratchet to remove the exposed door panel screws.
• Use an 8mm socket if your door panel uses an 8mm fastener behind the handle trim.
• Keep the screws in order so they return to the same locations.

Step 4: Release the Door Trim Panel

• Use a trim panel removal tool at the lower edge of the front door panel.
• Pry outward near each clip until the clips release.
• Work around the lower and side edges of the panel.
• Lift the panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
• Do not pull the panel away quickly because cables and connectors are still attached.

Step 5: Disconnect Door Panel Cables and Connectors

• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release any electrical connector locks.
• Unplug the door panel connectors by hand.
• Use a pick tool to release the interior door handle cable retainer.
• Lift the cable end out of the handle lever by hand.
• Set the door panel on a clean towel.
• Take a photo before unplugging connectors.

Step 6: Remove the Mirror Inner Cover

• Use a plastic pry tool to remove the triangular inner mirror cover at the upper front corner of the door.
• Pull straight outward to release the retaining clips.
• Set the cover aside where the clips will not be bent.

Step 7: Locate and Unplug the Mirror Connector

• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to unlock the mirror electrical connector.
• Unplug the connector by hand.
• Free the mirror wiring harness from any door retainers using a pick tool.
• Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the connector body.

Step 8: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts

• Support the outside mirror with one hand.
• Use a 10mm deep socket with ratchet and 3-inch extension to remove the mirror mounting nuts from inside the door.
• Remove the lower nut first, then the upper nuts.
• Keep one nut loosely threaded until you are ready to remove the mirror.
• Torque on installation: 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)

Step 9: Remove the Old Mirror

• Hold the mirror firmly from outside the door.
• Use a 10mm deep socket to remove the final loose mounting nut.
• Carefully pull the mirror straight away from the door.
• Feed the wiring harness through the door opening by hand.
• Remove the old foam gasket if it stayed stuck to the door.

Step 10: Install the New Mirror

• Confirm the new mirror has the same connector style and features as the old mirror.
• Make sure the foam gasket is seated flat on the new mirror base.
• Feed the mirror wiring harness through the door opening by hand.
• Place the mirror studs through the door holes.
• Start all 10mm mounting nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.

Step 11: Tighten the Mirror Mounting Nuts

• Use a 10mm deep socket to snug the mirror mounting nuts evenly.
• Use an inch-pound torque wrench with 10mm deep socket to tighten the nuts to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten. The mirror base and door sheet metal can be damaged.

Step 12: Connect the Mirror Wiring

• Route the mirror wiring along the original path by hand.
• Press the harness back into its retainers by hand.
• Plug in the mirror connector until it clicks.
• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to seat the connector lock.

Step 13: Test the Mirror Before Reassembly

• Reconnect the driver door switch trim connectors by hand.
• Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily.
• Turn the ignition to run without starting the engine.
• Test mirror glass adjustment using the mirror switch.
• Test heat, turn signal, puddle lamp, power fold, and blind spot indicator if equipped.
• Turn ignition off after testing.
• Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before final door panel installation.

Step 14: Reinstall the Mirror Inner Cover

• Align the triangular mirror cover clips by hand.
• Press the cover straight into place until it clicks.
• Make sure it sits flush against the door trim area.

Step 15: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

• Reconnect the interior door handle cable by hand.
• Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors by hand until each one clicks.
• Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
• Align the trim clips with the holes in the door.
• Press around the edges of the panel with your palm until the clips snap in.

Step 16: Reinstall Door Panel Screws and Switch Trim

• Use a 7mm socket to reinstall the door panel screws.
• Use an 8mm socket for any 8mm fasteners removed earlier.
• Tighten the screws snug only. Plastic trim can crack if overtightened.
• Snap the trim covers back in by hand.
• Plug in the window switch trim connectors by hand.
• Press the switch trim into the armrest until it clicks.

Step 17: Final Battery Connection

• Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative 12V battery cable.
• Tighten the cable snugly so it cannot rotate on the battery post.
• Remove the painter’s tape and microfiber towel from the door.
