🔧 CX-5 - Side View Mirror Replacement

This repair replaces the complete outside side view mirror assembly on your CX-5. The mirror is bolted to the front door from behind the interior door trim panel, so the door panel must be removed carefully to access the mirror fasteners and electrical connector.

📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your CX-5 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
• 🔋 Turn the ignition off and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
• 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait at least 3 minutes before unplugging door connectors.
• 🪟 Lower the window fully before disconnecting the battery. This gives more room to lift the door panel off.
• 🛡️ Apply 1-inch painter’s tape around the mirror base and upper door edge to protect the paint.
• 📌 A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps release interior panels without scratching them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

• Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
• Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it so it cannot spring back into contact.
• Take a phone photo first.

Step 2: Remove the Interior Door Handle Trim

• Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off the small trim cover behind the inside door handle.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw hidden behind the cover.
• Place the screw in a magnetic parts tray.

Step 3: Remove the Door Pull Screw Cover

• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver wrapped with a microfiber towel to lift the cover inside the door pull pocket.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw inside the pull pocket.
• Work slowly to avoid marks.

Step 4: Release the Door Panel Clips

• Start at the lower rear corner of the door panel.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool to pry between the door panel and the metal door shell.
• Use panel clip pliers if a clip is tight. Panel clip pliers are fork-shaped pliers that pull trim clips straight out.
• Continue around the bottom and sides until the clips release.
• Do not pry at the top edge yet. The top edge hooks over the window ledge.

Step 5: Lift Off the Door Panel

• Hold the door panel with both hands.
• Lift the panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
• Support the panel close to the door while the connectors and cables are still attached.

Step 6: Disconnect Door Panel Connectors and Cables

• Use your fingers to press the release tab on the window switch connector and unplug it.
• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to gently help release connector locks.
• Disconnect the interior handle cable and lock cable from the back of the door panel.
• Set the door panel on a clean microfiber towel.

Step 7: Remove the Mirror Sail Trim

• The sail trim is the small triangular interior cover at the front upper corner of the door.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the sail trim away from the door.
• If equipped with a small speaker, unplug the connector by pressing the release tab with your fingers.

Step 8: Disconnect the Mirror Electrical Connector

• Locate the mirror wiring connector inside the upper front area of the door.
• Use your fingers to press the connector release tab and unplug it.
• If the harness is clipped to the door, use a plastic trim removal tool to release the harness retainers.
• Note the wire routing before removal so the new mirror harness follows the same path.

Step 9: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts

• Support the outside mirror with one hand.
• Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet handle to remove the 3 mirror mounting nuts.
• Keep pressure on the mirror while removing the final nut.
• Do not drop the nuts inside the door.

Step 10: Remove the Old Mirror

• From outside the door, gently pull the mirror straight away from the door.
• Feed the wiring harness through the opening carefully.
• Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the mounting area.
• Check that the old foam gasket did not stick to the door.

Step 11: Install the New Mirror

• Feed the new mirror wiring harness through the door opening.
• Seat the mirror flush against the door with the gasket flat and even.
• Start all 3 mounting nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and torque wrench to tighten the mirror nuts evenly.
• Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs)

Step 12: Reconnect and Route the Mirror Harness

• Route the mirror harness exactly like the original harness.
• Use your fingers to reconnect the mirror electrical connector until it clicks.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool to press any harness clips back into their holes.
• Make sure the harness cannot contact the window glass or regulator.

Step 13: Reinstall the Mirror Sail Trim

• If equipped with a sail speaker, reconnect the speaker connector by hand until it clicks.
• Line up the sail trim clips.
• Press the trim into place with your palm until it seats evenly.

Step 14: Reconnect the Door Panel

• Reconnect the interior handle cable and lock cable by hand.
• Reconnect the window switch connector by hand until it clicks.
• Check that all door panel clips are present. Replace broken clips before installation.

Step 15: Reinstall the Door Panel

• Hook the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
• Line up the clips with the holes in the door.
• Press around the sides and bottom with your palm until each clip snaps in.
• Use firm pressure, not punches.

Step 16: Reinstall Door Screws and Covers

• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw behind the interior door handle.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw inside the door pull pocket.
• Torque snug only, about 1.5-2.5 Nm (13-22 in-lbs)
• Snap both screw covers back into place by hand.

Step 17: Reconnect the Battery

• Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
• Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to tighten the terminal nut.
• Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs)

✅ After Repair

• ✅ Turn the ignition on and test mirror glass movement in all directions.
• ✅ Test power folding if equipped.
• ✅ Test the mirror turn signal, heating function, memory position, and blind spot indicator if equipped.
• ✅ Test the front window auto-up and auto-down. If auto function is lost, fully close the window and hold the switch up for 2 seconds, then fully open it and hold down for 2 seconds.
• ✅ Check that the door locks, interior handle, and outside handle work normally.
• ✅ If equipped with a side camera, check the 360° camera display. If the image is misaligned, calibration may be needed with a Mazda-capable scan tool.
• ✅ Drive slowly and listen for wind noise near the mirror. Wind noise usually means the gasket is pinched or the mirror is not seated evenly.
