🔧 Malibu - Side View Mirror Replacement
Replacing either outside mirror involves removing the interior triangular trim, unplugging the mirror, and removing three mounting nuts. These instructions cover the complete power-mirror assembly on either front door; transfer the painted cover if your replacement mirror does not include one.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour per mirror
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Wear gloves because broken mirror glass can have sharp edges.
- 🔋 Disconnect the battery before unplugging the mirror or tweeter wiring.
- 🚪 Support the mirror before removing the final nut so it cannot fall against the door.
- 🛡️ Do not pry with a metal screwdriver against painted surfaces or the side window.
- ⚡ Wait at least two minutes after disconnecting the battery before handling door wiring.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch drive ratchet
- 1/4-inch drive 6-inch extension
- 10mm torque wrench rated 2-20 Nm
- Plastic trim-removal tool set
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Magnetic pickup tool
- Masking tape
- Cut-resistant work gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Left or right power side-view mirror assembly - Qty: 1 per side
- Mirror mounting foam seal - Qty: 1 per side if not included
- Interior mirror trim-panel retainers - Qty: As needed
- Painted mirror cover - Qty: 1 per side if not reusable or included
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Malibu on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and lower the window on the side being repaired.
- 🪟 Lowering the window gives you a safe handhold and prevents accidental glass damage.
- 🎨 Apply masking tape around the mirror base and interior triangular trim to protect the paint and trim.
- 🔑 Switch the ignition off and keep the key or transmitter away from the vehicle.
- 🔋 Open the hood. Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut, then isolate the cable so it cannot touch the terminal.
- 🧩 A trim-removal tool is a smooth plastic lever designed to release clips without scratching panels.
- ℹ️ Assumption: The replacement matches your Malibu’s original power-mirror connector and installed features.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Interior Mirror Trim
- Insert a plastic trim-removal tool between the upper edge of the triangular interior trim panel and the door.
- Gently pry the panel inward to release its retaining clips, then lift it away from the door.
- Do not twist the panel sharply; a tweeter speaker may be attached behind it.
- Work slowly to avoid breaking the retaining clips.
Step 2: Disconnect the Tweeter if Equipped
- Support the trim panel with one hand.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to depress the tweeter connector lock, then unplug it by holding the connector body.
- Set the trim panel in a clean, protected location.
Step 3: Expose the Mirror Wiring
- Carefully peel the foam insulation or water shield away from the mirror mounting area by hand.
- Do not tear or discard the insulation. It helps prevent wind noise and water intrusion.
- Locate the mirror electrical connector behind the triangular opening.
Step 4: Unplug the Mirror
- Press the locking tab on the mirror connector by hand and pull the two connector halves apart.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if the locking tab is difficult to press.
- Release the wiring harness from any retaining clip so it can pass through the door opening.
- Pull on the connector body, not the wires.
Step 5: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts
- Hold the outside mirror firmly with one hand or have a helper support it.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
- Keep the socket level so a nut does not fall into the door. Use a magnetic pickup tool if one is dropped.
- Leave one nut loosely installed until you are ready to remove the mirror.
Step 6: Remove the Old Mirror
- Remove the final nut with the 10mm socket while supporting the mirror.
- From outside the door, pull the mirror straight away while guiding its connector and wiring through the opening.
- Use a plastic trim-removal tool only if the foam seal is lightly stuck to the door.
- Clean the mounting surface with a dry cloth and inspect it for bent metal or damaged paint.
Step 7: Transfer the Painted Cover if Required
- Skip this step if the replacement mirror already has the correct finished cover.
- Use a plastic trim-removal tool to release the cover’s clips from the old mirror, working around the perimeter gradually.
- Align the cover with the replacement mirror and press evenly by hand until every clip snaps into place.
- Do not press directly on the mirror glass.
Step 8: Install the Replacement Mirror
- Confirm that the foam seal is correctly seated on the replacement mirror. Install a new seal if it is torn, compressed, or missing.
- Guide the electrical connector through the door opening and place the mirror studs into their mounting holes.
- Hold the mirror flush against the door while starting all three nuts by hand.
- Starting the nuts by hand prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by installing a nut at an angle.
Step 9: Tighten the Mirror Nuts
- Use a 10mm torque wrench and extension to tighten the three mounting nuts evenly.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the nuts; excessive force can crack the mirror base or distort the door panel.
Step 10: Reconnect the Wiring
- Push the mirror electrical connectors together by hand until the lock clicks.
- Gently tug the connector bodies to verify they are fully locked.
- Secure the harness in its original retaining clip and keep it away from the window mechanism.
- Press the foam insulation or water shield back into its original position by hand.
Step 11: Reinstall the Interior Trim
- If equipped, reconnect the tweeter plug by hand until it clicks.
- Align the triangular trim panel and its retaining clips with the door openings.
- Press the panel firmly by hand until all clips are seated and the edges lie flat.
- Remove the masking tape from the door and mirror base.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable onto its terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut securely without crushing the terminal.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Switch the ignition on and operate the mirror through its full up, down, left, and right movement.
- 🔊 Confirm the door tweeter works if its connector was unplugged.
- 🪟 Run the window completely down and up while listening for contact with the mirror wiring.
- 🔍 Check that the mirror base sits evenly against the door and that the foam seal is not visible or folded.
- 🚗 Verify the mirror remains stable during a short, low-speed test drive.
- ⚙️ If one-touch window operation was lost, close the window fully and continue holding the switch upward for approximately two seconds.
