📋 Before You Begin

• Park your RAV4 on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Lower the front window on the door you are working on. This gives you room to hold the mirror.
• Turn the ignition off and keep the key away from the vehicle.
• Use painter’s tape around the mirror base and upper door edge to protect the paint.
• Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket. The 12V battery is in the rear cargo area on your RAV4.
• A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to pop panels loose without scratching them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect the Door Area

• Use painter’s tape 1-inch width around the mirror base and the painted door edge.
• Place a shop towel over the upper door trim to prevent scratches.
• Take your time here.

Step 2: Disconnect the 12V Battery

• Open the rear cargo area and access the 12V battery compartment.
• Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle 1/4-inch drive to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
• Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
• This prevents accidental electrical shorts while unplugging the mirror connector.

Step 3: Remove the Inner Door Handle Screw Cover

• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver wrapped with a shop towel to gently open the small cover behind the inside door handle.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the cover.
• Place the screw in a magnetic parts tray.

Step 4: Remove the Door Pull Screw Cover

• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver wrapped with a shop towel to lift the cover inside the door pull pocket.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw inside the pocket.
• Place the screw in a magnetic parts tray.

Step 5: Remove the Power Window Switch Panel

• Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry upward at the rear edge of the switch panel.
• Lift the panel slowly, then unplug the electrical connector by pressing its release tab.
• Set the switch panel on a clean shop towel.
• Plastic tabs break easily.

Step 6: Release the Door Trim Panel Clips

• Use a plastic trim removal tool set at the lower edge of the door panel.
• Pop the retaining clips loose one at a time around the bottom and sides of the panel.
• A retaining clip is a small plastic fastener that snaps the door panel to the metal door shell.
• Do not pull the top of the panel straight out yet.

Step 7: Lift Off the Door Trim Panel

• Use both hands and lift the door trim panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
• Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to release cable clips or electrical connector locks.
• Disconnect any remaining connectors carefully by pressing the release tabs.
• Set the door panel aside on a shop towel.

Step 8: Remove the Mirror Interior Garnish Cover

• The triangular plastic cover at the front upper corner of the door is the mirror garnish cover.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool set to pry the cover straight outward.
• Remove it carefully so the clips do not break.

Step 9: Unplug the Mirror Connector

• Locate the mirror wiring connector inside the door near the mirror mounting area.
• Press the connector release tab with your fingers or a small flat-blade screwdriver.
• Unplug the mirror connector without pulling on the wires.

Step 10: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts

• Hold the outside mirror with one hand through the open window.
• Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension 1/4-inch drive, and ratchet handle 1/4-inch drive to remove the mirror mounting nuts.
• There are typically three mirror mounting nuts.
• Place the nuts in a magnetic parts tray.
• Do not drop the nuts inside the door.

Step 11: Remove the Old Mirror

• From outside the door, gently pull the mirror assembly away from the door.
• Feed the wiring harness through the door opening.
• Use a shop towel to clean dirt from the mirror mounting area.
• Do not scrape the paint.

Step 12: Install the New Mirror

• Check that the foam seal is seated on the new mirror base.
• Feed the new mirror wiring through the door opening.
• Position the mirror against the door and start the mounting nuts by hand.
• Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension 1/4-inch drive, and ratchet handle 1/4-inch drive to snug the nuts evenly.
• Use a torque wrench 1/4-inch drive inch-pound to tighten the mirror mounting nuts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten plastic mirror studs.

Step 13: Reconnect the Mirror Wiring

• Plug the mirror connector into the door harness until it clicks.
• Use your fingers to gently tug the connector body and confirm it is locked.
• Do not pull on the wires.

Step 14: Reinstall the Mirror Garnish Cover

• Line up the triangular garnish cover with its clips.
• Press it into place by hand until the clips snap in.
• Use a shop towel under your palm if the edge feels sharp.

Step 15: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

• Reconnect any electrical connectors you unplugged earlier.
• Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge first.
• Use your palm to press around the panel edges and snap the clips back into the door.
• If any clips are broken, replace them with door trim panel retaining clips.

Step 16: Reinstall the Screws and Switch Panel

• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw behind the inside door handle.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw in the door pull pocket.
• Snap both screw covers closed by hand.
• Reconnect the power window switch panel connector.
• Press the switch panel down by hand until it clicks into place.

Step 17: Reconnect the 12V Battery

• Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
• Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle 1/4-inch drive to tighten the negative terminal nut.
• Tighten it snugly; do not overtighten the small clamp.

• Turn the ignition on and test power mirror movement in all directions.
• Test mirror heat using the rear defogger switch if your mirror is heated.
• Test the turn signal in the mirror if equipped.
• Check the blind-spot indicator light if equipped; the system indicator may briefly illuminate during startup.
• Test the power window and door lock switches on the repaired door.
• If the auto window function does not work, fully lower the window, then fully raise it and hold the switch up for 2 seconds.
• Listen for rattles by gently closing the door and driving at low speed.
