šŸ”§ Mustang - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing the side view mirror on your Mustang involves removing the interior door trim panel, unplugging the mirror wiring, and unbolting the mirror from the door. This is a good beginner-friendly repair if you work slowly and protect the paint and trim.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours per side

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging mirror wiring connectors.
  • āš ļø Wear safety glasses and gloves. Door trim clips and inner door edges can be sharp.
  • āš ļø Support the mirror with one hand while removing the final nut so it does not fall and scratch the door.
  • āš ļø Protect the painted door surface with painter’s tape near the mirror base.
  • āš ļø If your mirror has blind spot monitoring, do not damage the wiring or connector. The feature must work after replacement.

  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Panel clip pliers
  • Small flat pick tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painter’s tape
  • Shop towels
  • Work light
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly - Qty: 1 per side
  • Door trim panel clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Mirror mounting nuts - Qty: 3 if damaged or missing

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Mustang on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
  • Use painter’s tape around the mirror base and upper door paint to reduce the chance of scratches.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging any door electrical connectors.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Interior Door Handle Trim Cover

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry off the small cover behind the interior door handle.
  • If a tab is stubborn, use a small flat pick tool to release it carefully.
  • A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching them.
  • Start at an edge, not the center.

Step 2: Remove the Armrest and Door Pull Covers

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to lift the cover in the armrest/door pull area.
  • Use the small flat pick tool only if needed to release small retaining tabs.
  • Place removed covers on a shop towel so they do not get scratched.

Step 3: Remove the Door Panel Fasteners

  • Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the armrest/door pull bolt.
  • Use a 7mm socket with a 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower door panel screws if equipped.
  • Use a 7mm socket or 8mm socket as needed for any visible door panel screws on your panel.
  • Keep all screws grouped on a shop towel.

Step 4: Release the Door Panel Clips

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set at the bottom edge of the door panel to pop the first clip loose.
  • Continue around the sides and lower edge until all clips release.
  • Use panel clip pliers if a clip stays in the door instead of the panel.
  • Panel clip pliers are fork-shaped pliers that remove plastic panel clips without breaking them.

Step 5: Lift Off the Door Panel

  • Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the upper window ledge.
  • Do not pull the panel far away yet. Wiring and the handle cable are still attached.
  • Use a work light to see behind the panel.

Step 6: Disconnect Door Panel Wiring and Handle Cable

  • Use a small flat pick tool to press connector lock tabs, then unplug the electrical connectors by hand.
  • Use needle-nose pliers if needed to release the interior handle cable retainer.
  • Set the door panel on a clean shop towel.

Step 7: Remove the Mirror Sail Panel

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry off the triangular inside sail panel at the front top of the door.
  • Pull straight outward to release the clips.
  • Set the sail panel on a shop towel.
  • The sail panel is the small triangular trim piece inside the door near the mirror.

Step 8: Unplug the Mirror Connector

  • Use a work light to locate the mirror wiring connector inside the door.
  • Use a small flat pick tool to release the connector lock tab.
  • Unplug the mirror connector by hand.
  • If the harness is clipped to the door, use the small flat pick tool to release the clip gently.

Step 9: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts

  • Hold the mirror with one hand outside the door.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
  • Remove the lower nut first, then the upper nuts.
  • Keep a finger on the final nut so it does not fall inside the door.
  • Support the mirror before the last nut.

Step 10: Remove the Old Mirror

  • Pull the old side view mirror assembly straight away from the door by hand.
  • Feed the wiring harness through the door opening carefully.
  • Use shop towels to clean dirt around the mirror mounting surface.
  • Do not scrape the paint with metal tools.

Step 11: Install the New Mirror

  • Feed the new mirror wiring harness through the door opening by hand.
  • Seat the new side view mirror assembly against the door.
  • Start the three mirror mounting nuts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench in-lb range. Torque mirror mounting nuts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 12: Connect and Route the Mirror Wiring

  • Plug the mirror connector in by hand until it clicks.
  • Route the harness along the original path.
  • Use the original clips to secure the wiring so it cannot touch the window glass.
  • Use a work light to confirm the harness is clear of moving parts.

Step 13: Test the Mirror Before Reassembly

  • Temporarily reconnect the door panel switch connector by hand if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Use the mirror switch to move the glass up, down, left, and right.
  • If equipped, test the mirror turn signal, puddle lamp, heated mirror, and blind spot indicator.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable again before final door panel installation.

Step 14: Reinstall the Mirror Sail Panel

  • Align the sail panel clips by hand.
  • Press the triangular sail panel into place until it clicks.
  • Make sure the panel sits flush along the door edge.

Step 15: Reconnect Door Panel Wiring and Handle Cable

  • Reconnect each door electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the interior handle cable by hand.
  • Use needle-nose pliers only if the cable retainer is difficult to seat.

Step 16: Reinstall the Door Panel

  • Hang the door panel over the upper window ledge by hand.
  • Line up the panel clips with the holes in the door.
  • Press around the edges by hand until the clips snap in.
  • Use panel clip pliers to replace any broken clips with door trim panel clips.

Step 17: Reinstall Door Panel Fasteners and Trim Covers

  • Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the armrest/door pull bolt.
  • Use a 7mm socket with a 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the lower door panel screws if equipped.
  • Use a torque wrench in-lb range where accessible. Torque small door trim screws snug only, about 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs).
  • Snap the armrest and handle trim covers back on by hand.

Step 18: Reconnect Battery and Final Test

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Test mirror adjustment again with the mirror switch.
  • If equipped, test turn signal, puddle lamp, heated glass, and blind spot indicator.
  • Close the door gently and check that the mirror is tight and does not rattle.

āœ… After Repair

  • āœ… Adjust the mirror to your normal driving position.
  • āœ… Test the window and door lock switches to confirm all connectors are fully seated.
  • āœ… Check that the door panel sits flush and no clips are loose.
  • āœ… Drive slowly over a rough surface and listen for mirror or door panel rattles.
  • āœ… If blind spot monitoring is equipped and a warning message appears, scan the vehicle for body/driver-assist codes.
