🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each lug nut about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack under the approved frame lifting point near the corner you are working on.
- Place a jack stand under the frame rail and slowly lower your Expedition onto it.
- Keep the floor jack lightly supporting the lower control arm or rear axle area. This prevents the suspension from dropping suddenly.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and set it flat under the vehicle as a backup safety cushion.
Step 4: Disconnect the Electronic Shock Connector if Equipped
- Look at the top or side of the shock for an electrical connector.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to release the connector lock gently.
- Unplug the connector by pulling on the plastic plug, not the wires.
- A connector is the plastic plug that carries electrical signals to the shock.
Step 5: Support the Suspension at the Shock
- Use the floor jack to gently lift the lower control arm or rear axle until the shock is not stretched tight.
- The shock should look relaxed, not pulling down on the suspension.
- Small jack movements help.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Shock Bolt
- Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the lower shock bolt and nut.
- If the bolt sticks, tap it gently with a rubber mallet.
- Do not hammer on the threaded end unless the nut is loosely installed to protect the threads.
Step 7: Remove the Upper Shock Mount Fasteners
- Use a 15mm socket or 18mm socket, depending on the mount fastener size, to remove the upper shock fasteners.
- Hold the shock with one hand while removing the last fastener so it does not fall.
- Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
Step 8: Compare the Old and New Shock
- Set the old and new shock side by side.
- Confirm the length, mounting eyes, studs, bushings, and electrical connector match.
- If the new shock has a shipping strap, do not cut it until you are ready to line up the mounts.
Step 9: Install the New Upper Shock Mount
- Position the new shock in the upper mount by hand.
- Install the upper fasteners finger-tight first. Finger-tight means threaded in by hand without fully tightening.
- Use a 15mm socket or 18mm socket to snug the upper fasteners.
- Final tighten the upper shock fasteners with a torque wrench: Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs), unless your replacement hardware specifies otherwise.
Step 10: Install the Lower Shock Bolt
- Use the floor jack to raise or lower the suspension slightly until the lower shock hole lines up.
- Slide the lower bolt through by hand. Do not force it with an impact tool.
- Install the nut and snug it with an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench.
- Final tighten the lower shock bolt with a torque wrench: Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs), unless your replacement hardware specifies otherwise.
Step 11: Reconnect the Electronic Shock Connector if Equipped
- Push the connector together until it clicks.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to secure any wiring clips back into their original locations.
- Make sure the wire cannot rub the tire, spring, or moving suspension parts.
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat the same process on the matching shock on the opposite side.
- Use the 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, 15mm socket, and torque wrench the same way.
- Always replace shocks in left/right pairs.
Step 13: Reinstall the Wheels
- Place the wheel back on the hub.
- Install lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, then lower your Expedition to the ground.
- Use a torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Bounce each corner of your Expedition by hand. It should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
- ✅ Start the vehicle and check the instrument cluster for suspension warnings.
- ✅ If a suspension warning appears after replacing electronic shocks, scan for chassis/suspension codes and verify each connector is fully seated.
- ✅ Test drive slowly first. Listen for clunks, rubbing, or rattles.
- ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles: Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
- ✅ A wheel alignment is usually not required for shock-only replacement, but get one if tire wear or pulling was present before the repair.
