🔧 Canyon - Shock Absorber Replacement

This repair replaces the shock absorbers that control bounce and help keep the tires planted on the road. On your Canyon, the rear shocks are separate shock absorbers, while the front uses coilover-style shock assemblies with coil springs mounted around the shock.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always support your Canyon with jack stands before working underneath it.
  • ⚠️ Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ The front coil spring is under high pressure. Do not remove the center nut on the front shock assembly unless using a proper spring compressor.
  • ⚠️ For beginner DIY, use complete front shock/strut assemblies to avoid compressing the spring.
  • ⚠️ Replace shocks in pairs: both fronts together or both rears together.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • ⚠️ A front wheel alignment is recommended after replacing the front shock assemblies.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Canyon on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks against the tires that stay on the ground.
  • Spray penetrating oil on all shock mounting bolts and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the front lower shock bolt positions before removal. This helps keep the alignment close enough for a safe drive to the alignment shop.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the wheel lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
  • Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack under the front frame crossmember to lift the front of your Canyon.
  • Place jack stands under the front frame rails.
  • Lower the truck slowly onto the jack stands.
  • Push the truck gently by hand to make sure it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels.
  • Set the wheels flat under the side of the truck as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack under the lower control arm near the outer end.
  • The lower control arm is the large metal suspension arm below the front shock assembly.
  • Raise the jack just enough to support the arm, but do not lift the truck off the jack stand.

Step 5: Remove the Front Lower Shock Bolts

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower shock mount before removing bolts.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the lower shock mounting bolts and nuts.
  • If the bolts are stuck, use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar for more leverage.
  • Use a rubber mallet to tap the bolts out if needed.

Step 6: Remove the Front Upper Shock Nuts

  • Open the hood.
  • Find the three upper shock mount nuts at the top of the shock tower.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper mounting nuts.
  • Do not remove the center shaft nut.
  • The center shaft nut holds the spring pressure and is unsafe to remove without a spring compressor.

Step 7: Remove the Front Shock Assembly

  • Lower the floor jack slightly under the lower control arm.
  • Use a pry bar gently if the shock assembly needs help coming free.
  • Remove the complete shock assembly through the wheel opening.

Step 8: Install the New Front Shock Assembly

  • Guide the new front complete shock assembly into place through the wheel opening.
  • Start the upper nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the upper nuts.
  • Do not fully tighten them yet.

Step 9: Install the Front Lower Bolts

  • Use the floor jack to move the lower control arm up or down until the bolt holes line up.
  • Install the lower bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to snug the lower bolts.
  • Line up your paint marks as closely as possible.

Step 10: Tighten the Front Shock Fasteners

  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the front lower shock bolts to Torque to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 15mm socket to tighten the front upper shock mount nuts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat Steps 4-10 on the other front side.

Step 11: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Put the front wheels back on by hand.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to lift the truck slightly.
  • Remove the jack stands and lower the truck to the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm socket to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Lift and Support the Rear

  • Place wheel chocks in front of the front tires.
  • Use the floor jack under the rear axle to lift the rear of your Canyon.
  • Place jack stands under the rear frame rails.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly supporting the rear axle.

Step 13: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the rear lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels for better access.

Step 14: Remove the Rear Lower Shock Bolt

  • Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the lower rear shock bolt and nut.
  • If the bolt feels pinched, raise or lower the axle slightly with the floor jack.
  • This removes pressure from the bolt so it slides out easier.

Step 15: Remove the Rear Upper Shock Bolt

  • Support the shock with one hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the upper rear shock bolt and nut.
  • Remove the old rear shock absorber.

Step 16: Install the New Rear Shock

  • Place the new rear shock in the same direction as the old one.
  • Start the upper bolt by hand first.
  • Start the lower bolt by hand next.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to snug both bolts.

Step 17: Tighten the Rear Shock Bolts

  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the rear upper shock bolt to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the rear lower shock bolt to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat Steps 14-17 on the other rear side.

Step 18: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Install the rear wheels by hand.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to lift the rear slightly.
  • Remove the jack stands and lower your Canyon to the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm socket to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Push down firmly on each corner of your Canyon. It should rise and settle quickly.
  • ✅ Take a slow test drive over a smooth road first.
  • ✅ Listen for clunks, rattles, or loose hardware noises.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ Get a front wheel alignment if the front shock assemblies were replaced.
