📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Sierra 1500 on level ground and shift the transmission into Park.
• 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the wheels that will stay on the ground.
• 🔩 Spray penetrating oil on all shock absorber mounting bolts and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
• 📌 A shock absorber controls bouncing. It does not hold the truck up like a spring.
• 📌 Replace shocks in pairs on the same axle so the truck handles evenly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Wheel Lug Nuts

• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts about half a turn.
• Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
• Break them loose before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame crossmember or approved front frame lift point.
• Raise the truck high enough for the front wheels to clear the ground.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
• Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
• Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

• Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
• Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the side of the truck as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Front Lower Shock Bolt

• Locate the lower shock mount at the lower control arm.
• Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the lower shock bolt and nut.
• If rust is present, clean the threads with a wire brush and spray penetrating oil.
• Use a flat pry bar only if needed to gently unload the shock eye from the bracket.

Step 5: Remove the Front Upper Shock Mount Nuts

• From inside the wheel well, locate the two upper shock mounting nuts at the frame pocket.
• Use a 15mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper mounting nuts.
• Support the shock with one hand as you remove the last nut so it does not fall.

Step 6: Remove the Front Shock Absorber

• Pull the shock downward and out through the wheel well.
• If it sticks, use a flat pry bar gently at the mounting bracket.
• Compare the old and new shock absorber before installing.
• Match the mounts before tightening.

Step 7: Install the New Front Shock Absorber

• Position the new front shock absorber into the upper frame mount by hand.
• Install the upper nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the upper shock nuts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
• Align the lower shock eye with the lower control arm bracket.
• Use a flat pry bar gently if needed to line up the bolt hole.
• Install the lower bolt and nut by hand.
• Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the lower bolt to Torque to 80 Nm (59 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Repeat for the Other Front Shock

• Use the same tools and steps on the opposite front shock absorber.
• Always replace the left and right front shocks together.

Step 9: Reinstall the Front Wheels

• Place the wheels back onto the hubs.
• Install the lug nuts by hand first.
• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
• Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum, remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum, and lower the truck to the ground.
• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Raise and Support the Rear of the Truck

• Place wheel chocks at the front wheels.
• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the rear axle tube near the center, avoiding the differential cover.
• Raise the rear of the truck enough to access the rear shocks.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
• Keep light support under the rear axle with the floor jack so the axle does not drop suddenly.

Step 11: Remove the Rear Lower Shock Bolt

• Locate the lower shock mount at the rear axle bracket.
• Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the lower shock bolt and nut.
• If the bolt is tight, use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar for extra leverage.

Step 12: Remove the Rear Upper Shock Bolt

• Locate the upper shock mount at the frame rail.
• Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the upper shock bolt and nut.
• Support the shock with one hand before removing the final bolt.

Step 13: Install the New Rear Shock Absorber

• Position the new rear shock absorber at the upper frame mount.
• Install the upper bolt and nut by hand.
• Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the upper bolt to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).
• Line up the lower shock mount with the rear axle bracket.
• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to slightly raise or lower the axle until the bolt slides in easily.
• Install the lower bolt and nut by hand.
• Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the lower bolt to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Repeat for the Other Rear Shock

• Use the same tools and steps on the opposite rear shock absorber.
• Always replace the left and right rear shocks together.

Step 15: Lower the Truck and Final Check

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the rear slightly.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower the truck slowly to the ground.
• Use a torque wrench to recheck all accessible shock mounting bolts.

• ✅ Bounce each corner of your Sierra 1500 by pushing down firmly on the bumper area. It should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
• ✅ Take a slow test drive first. Listen for clunks, rattles, or knocking sounds.
• ✅ Recheck the shock mounting bolts after the first short drive.
• ✅ If you removed the wheels, recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench.
