🔧 Civic - Rear Window Regulator Replacement

This repair replaces the rear door window regulator, which is the scissor/cable mechanism that moves the glass up and down inside the door. On your Civic hatchback, the rear door panel must come off, the glass must be supported, and the regulator/motor assembly is removed through the inner door opening.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the window motor connector to reduce the chance of shorting the circuit.
  • ⚠️ Door glass is heavy and sharp at the edges. Wear gloves and support the glass before loosening the regulator.
  • ⚠️ Do not slam the door while the glass is taped up or unsupported.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the regulator tracks. A regulator can pinch hard if it shifts suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Work slowly around the door trim clips so you do not crack the panel.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔋 If the window does not move, you may need to loosen the regulator first, then carefully slide the glass by hand.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 3 minutes before unplugging door electrical connectors.
  • 🧰 A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching them.
  • 🧰 Butyl sealing tape is sticky black sealing rope used to reseal the plastic moisture barrier inside the door.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Rear Door Switch Trim

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry up the rear window switch trim from the armrest area.
  • Use your fingers to lift the trim once it loosens.
  • Press the connector tab and unplug the window switch connector.
  • Set the trim somewhere safe so it does not get scratched.
  • Work from the rear edge first.

Step 2: Remove Door Panel Screws

  • Use a pick tool to remove any small screw cover inside the pull handle or door handle area.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the visible door panel screws.
  • Keep the screws in a cup or tray so they do not get lost.

Step 3: Release the Door Panel Clips

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool at the lower rear edge of the door panel.
  • Pry outward gently until the first clip pops free.
  • Continue around the lower and side edges of the panel using the plastic trim removal tool.
  • Use panel clip removal pliers if a clip stays stuck in the door.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug any remaining electrical connectors by pressing their locking tabs.

Step 4: Remove the Inner Moisture Barrier

  • Use your gloved fingers and a plastic trim removal tool to peel back the plastic moisture barrier.
  • Try to keep the black butyl sealer attached to the plastic.
  • Do not tear the moisture barrier. It keeps rainwater away from the cabin trim.
  • If the butyl stretches too much, cut it with a pick tool and reseal it later with fresh butyl sealing tape.

Step 5: Position and Support the Glass

  • If the window still moves, temporarily reconnect the window switch connector.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket just long enough to move the glass.
  • Move the glass until the glass mounting bolts are visible through the door access openings.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before continuing.
  • Apply 2-inch painter’s tape from the outside glass, over the top of the door frame, and onto the inside glass.
  • Use at least three long tape strips to hold the glass fully raised.
  • Tape is your helper here.

Step 6: Separate the Glass from the Regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 6-inch extension to loosen the glass mounting bolts through the access holes.
  • Do not remove the bolts completely unless required by your replacement regulator design.
  • Carefully slide the glass fully upward by hand while wearing mechanic gloves.
  • Add more 2-inch painter’s tape to hold the glass at the top of the door frame.
  • If the glass tries to drop, stop and add more tape before moving on.

Step 7: Disconnect the Window Motor

  • Use a work light to locate the window motor connector inside the door.
  • Press the connector lock with your thumb or a pick tool.
  • Pull the connector straight off the motor.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 8: Remove the Regulator Assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the regulator rail bolts from the inner door shell.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the window motor mounting bolts if the motor is attached to the regulator.
  • Support the regulator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Fold the regulator slightly and guide it out through the large door opening.
  • If needed, use needle-nose pliers to move wiring clips out of the way.

Step 9: Transfer the Motor if Needed

  • If your new regulator does not include a motor, use a 10mm socket to remove the motor from the old regulator.
  • Install the motor onto the new regulator in the same position.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 10mm socket to tighten the motor bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Do not power the motor while it is removed from the regulator.

Step 10: Install the New Regulator

  • Guide the new regulator assembly into the door through the large access opening.
  • Line up the regulator rails and motor bracket with the bolt holes.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 10mm socket to tighten the regulator bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 11: Reattach the Glass

  • Carefully remove enough 2-inch painter’s tape so the glass can slide down by hand.
  • Lower the glass into the regulator clamps or mounting points.
  • Make sure the glass sits squarely in the run channels on both sides.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug the glass mounting bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 10mm socket to tighten the glass mounting bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. Glass can crack if clamped too hard.

Step 12: Test Window Operation Before Reassembly

  • Plug the window motor connector back in until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the rear window switch connector.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the switch to move the rear window fully down and fully up.
  • Watch the glass carefully. It should move smoothly without tilting, binding, or clicking.
  • If it binds, stop and loosen the 10mm glass bolts slightly, realign the glass, then retighten to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 13: Reinstall the Moisture Barrier

  • Turn the ignition off.
  • Use your fingers to press the moisture barrier back onto the door.
  • Use fresh butyl sealing tape anywhere the original black sealer is missing or no longer sticky.
  • Make sure the wiring passes through the correct openings and is not pinched.

Step 14: Reinstall the Door Panel

  • Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors by hand until they click.
  • Hook the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
  • Line up the trim clips with the holes in the door.
  • Press around the edges of the door panel with your palm until each clip snaps in.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the door panel screws.
  • Snap the screw covers back in by hand.
  • Reconnect and snap the window switch trim back into the armrest.

Step 15: Initialize the Window Auto Function

  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Use the rear window switch to lower the window fully.
  • Hold the switch down for 2 seconds after the glass reaches the bottom.
  • Raise the window fully.
  • Hold the switch up for 2 seconds after the glass reaches the top.
  • Repeat once if the auto-up or auto-down function does not work normally.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test the rear window from both the rear door switch and the driver master switch.
  • ✅ Make sure the glass seals evenly at the top and does not rattle when the door closes.
  • ✅ Spray light water on the outside of the door glass and confirm no water enters past the moisture barrier area.
  • ✅ Check that the door lock, speaker, and switch illumination still work.
  • ✅ If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and any saved driver convenience settings as needed.
