🔧 Tacoma - Rear Window Regulator Replacement

This repair is for replacing the rear side window regulator in your Tacoma’s extended cab access door. The regulator is the mechanism inside the door that moves the glass up and down; if the glass is stuck, loose, or drops into the door, the regulator may be worn or broken.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours per side

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves because door glass can chip or shift suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Support the glass before removing regulator bolts so it does not fall inside the door.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable if your Tacoma has a power rear quarter window switch to prevent accidental motor movement.
  • ⚠️ Work slowly around plastic trim clips; they can break if pulled at an angle.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet with 3/8-inch drive
  • 6-inch extension with 3/8-inch drive
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch
  • Needle-nose pliers 6-inch
  • Painter’s tape 2-inch wide
  • Torque wrench 3/8-inch drive
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear side window regulator - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear side window regulator with motor - Qty: 1 per side, if equipped with power rear quarter window
  • Door trim panel clips - Qty: As needed
  • Butyl sealant strip - Qty: 1 roll, if vapor barrier seal is damaged

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear access door fully for room to work.
  • If equipped with power rear quarter windows, use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Move the glass to a halfway position if possible. If it will not move, you can still replace the regulator, but support the glass before unbolting anything.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop panels loose without scratching the door.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Rear Access Door Trim Panel

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any visible trim screws from the rear access door panel.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry around the edge of the panel and release the plastic clips.
  • Lift the panel upward and away from the door.
  • If there is a switch connector, press the tab by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch and unplug it.
  • Pull straight out, not upward.

Step 2: Peel Back the Moisture Barrier

  • Use your hands and a plastic trim removal tool to slowly peel back the clear plastic moisture barrier.
  • Do not tear it if possible. This barrier keeps water out of the cabin.
  • If the black sticky sealant stretches, leave it attached to the plastic so it can be reused.

Step 3: Support the Window Glass

  • Use painter’s tape 2-inch wide to tape the glass to the upper door frame.
  • Run at least two long strips from the outside of the glass, over the top frame, and onto the inside glass surface.
  • If the glass is already loose inside the door, lift it carefully by hand while wearing mechanic gloves, then tape it in place.
  • Use extra tape. Glass is heavy.

Step 4: Disconnect the Regulator or Motor Connector

  • If equipped with a power regulator, use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch to release the motor electrical connector lock.
  • Pull the connector straight off the motor.
  • If your Tacoma uses a manual-style rear quarter window regulator, skip this connector step.

Step 5: Separate the Glass from the Regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the glass-to-regulator bolts through the access openings.
  • Hold the glass with one hand while loosening the last bolt.
  • Leave the glass taped fully up once it is free from the regulator.

Step 6: Remove the Old Regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the regulator mounting bolts from the inner door shell.
  • If equipped with a power motor, remove the motor mounting bolts with the same 10mm socket.
  • Guide the regulator assembly out through the large door access opening.
  • Use needle-nose pliers 6-inch only if a cable or clip is caught, and do not bend the door metal.
  • Take a photo before removal.

Step 7: Install the New Regulator

  • Feed the new rear side window regulator into the door through the access opening.
  • Line up the mounting holes by hand first.
  • Install the regulator bolts finger-tight, then use a 10mm socket and ratchet to snug them.
  • Use a torque wrench with 10mm socket to tighten regulator mounting bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • If equipped with a power motor, tighten motor mounting bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 8: Attach the Glass to the New Regulator

  • Carefully remove only enough painter’s tape 2-inch wide so you can lower the glass by hand onto the regulator channel.
  • Line up the glass mounting holes with the regulator.
  • Install the glass bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench with 10mm socket to tighten the glass-to-regulator bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten glass bolts.

Step 9: Test Window Operation Before Reassembly

  • If equipped with power rear quarter windows, plug in the motor connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Operate the rear window switch and watch the regulator move smoothly.
  • If the glass binds, stop immediately and use a 10mm socket to loosen and realign the regulator slightly.
  • If manually operated, move the regulator through its full travel by hand and check for smooth glass movement.

Step 10: Reinstall the Moisture Barrier

  • Press the moisture barrier back onto the door by hand.
  • If the sealant no longer sticks, apply butyl sealant strip around the original sealing path.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to tuck the edges flat and keep wiring clear of the regulator.

Step 11: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

  • Reconnect any switch connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Set the door trim panel onto the upper edge of the door.
  • Use your palm to press around the panel edges and snap the clips back in.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the trim screws.
  • Do not overtighten trim screws; snug is enough.

✅ After Repair

  • Run the rear window through several full open and close cycles.
  • Listen for grinding, clicking, or cable popping sounds. Stop and recheck alignment if you hear any.
  • Check that the glass seals evenly against the weatherstrip.
  • If the battery was disconnected, reset clock and radio presets if needed.
  • Spray the window run channel lightly with silicone-safe glass channel lubricant if the glass moves slowly.
