šŸ”§ Sonata - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Sonata’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the rear lamp assemblies. Replacement is usually done from inside the trunk by twisting out a bulb socket, then swapping the bulb.

If your turn signal is in the trunk-lid lamp on your Sonata, access is slightly different than if it’s in the quarter-panel lamp—I'll show both paths.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the car fully OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle while working.
  • āš ļø Let the rear lamps cool before touching bulbs (they can get hot).
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø If you see orange high-voltage cables in the trunk area, do not disturb them (not typically required for this job).

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Small torque wrench (inch-pound capable)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the bulb number printed on your old bulb) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulbs (replace in pairs for even brightness) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove loose items so you can see the side trunk liner clearly.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which rear lamp contains the turn signal

  • Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF (do not leave them on while your hands are in the lamp area).
  • Watch the rear of the car to see where the amber/blinking turn signal is located: trunk lid lamp or quarter-panel lamp.
  • Use flashlight to identify the correct bulb socket from inside the trunk.

Step 2: Access the lamp from inside the trunk

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push-clips holding the trunk side liner/access flap.
  • If equipped with an access door, open it; otherwise gently peel the liner back by hand.

Step 3A: Replace bulb (common method: socket twist-out from inside trunk)

  • Locate the turn-signal bulb socket (usually the socket that points straight into the lamp housing).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some are a push-and-twist style; if it won’t pull out, try a gentle twist while pulling).
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket (match the base style to the old one).
  • Reinsert the socket into the lamp and rotate clockwise to lock.

Step 3B: If your turn signal is not a simple twist-out (lamp removal path)

  • From inside the trunk, locate the lamp retaining nuts/fasteners behind the lamp.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to remove the lamp retaining nuts.
  • Support the lamp with one hand, then carefully pull the lamp straight outward (do not pry hard; alignment pins hold it).
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab (use a Phillips screwdriver only if needed to gently help the tab—don’t break it).
  • Remove the turn-signal bulb socket from the lamp (counterclockwise), swap the bulb, then reinstall the socket.
  • Reinstall the lamp, making sure the alignment pins seat correctly.
  • Reinstall the nuts using the 10mm socket, then Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) using a small torque wrench (inch-pound capable).

Step 4: Reinstall trunk trim

  • Reposition the trunk liner.
  • Reinstall the push-clips by pressing them in by hand; use the trim clip removal tool to align holes if needed.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn hazards ON and confirm the repaired side blinks normally (not fast).
  • Confirm the bulb socket is fully seated and not loose (a loose socket can cause intermittent operation).
  • If the new bulb doesn’t light, flip it 180° only if it’s a wedge-style bulb; if it’s a bayonet-style, re-check seating and the connector.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$30 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
