🔧 Wrangler - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Wrangler, the rear turn signal bulb is inside the tail lamp assembly. You’ll remove the tail lamp (two screws), twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb, then reassemble and test.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

Assumption: OEM-style halogen tail lamps (not aftermarket LEDs).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the glass bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp while unplugging/twisting sockets so it doesn’t fall and crack.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn/stop/tail bulb (3157 type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp screws.
  • Have a clean glove or paper towel ready to handle the new bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inside edge of the tail lamp (they face inward toward the tailgate opening).
  • Set the screws aside somewhere safe.

Step 2: Pull the tail lamp straight back

  • Grip the tail lamp housing and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it’s stuck on the alignment pins, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it pop free.
  • Pull straight back—don’t pry hard sideways.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb socket for the stop/turn/tail function (this is the socket that uses a 3157-type bulb).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the tail lamp.
  • If needed, use a flashlight to confirm the correct socket.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in bulb).
  • Push the new 3157 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you touched the glass, wipe with alcohol and dry.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the tail lamp alignment pins with the body grommets, then push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
  • Install the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug only—do not overtighten).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the bulb on the opposite rear tail lamp the same way.
  • Replacing in pairs helps matching brightness/color.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON.
  • Test left and right turn signals and hazards.
  • Confirm the tail lamp is fully seated and not loose.
  • If the signal blinks fast, re-check the bulb seating and socket lock.
