🔧 RDX - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your RDX uses a conventional rear turn signal bulb inside the tail lamp assembly. The job is mostly trim access from inside the cargo area, then a simple bulb swap.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamps cool if they were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves to avoid cutting hands on trim edges.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access and good lighting.
- Keep clips in a cup so they don’t get lost.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp service opening
- Open the liftgate and go to the side you’re replacing.
- Use a small flashlight to locate the access panel behind the tail lamp area (inside the cargo trim).
- If your RDX has a small removable cover, pry it open carefully with a small flathead screwdriver.
- If trim clips are holding the panel/liner, pop them out using a trim clip removal tool.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp (if your RDX doesn’t have enough access)
- With the access area open, locate the lamp retaining fasteners.
- Remove the fasteners using an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet (some locations may use a screw; remove with a Phillips #2 screwdriver).
- Support the tail lamp with one hand and pull it straight back to release the alignment pins.
- Pull straight back—don’t twist the lamp.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will be one of the twist-lock sockets).
- Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it out.
- If it’s tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and wiggle gently—avoid using pliers.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry. (Dielectric grease is a silicone grease that helps keep moisture out.)
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- If you removed the tail lamp, align the pins and press the lamp straight into place.
- Reinstall the fasteners using an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet (snug only—do not overtighten plastic mounts).
- Reinstall any trim clips using the trim clip removal tool to press them back in evenly.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the opposite rear turn signal bulb the same way.
- Replacing in pairs helps match brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: left signal, right signal, hazards.
- Verify the turn signal flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and there are no gaps.
