🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulb in your Altima’s tail lamp assembly. A burned-out rear signal may cause fast blinking and makes lane changes or turns unsafe because drivers behind you cannot clearly see your signal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and make sure the exterior lights are OFF before removing the bulb socket.
- ⚠️ Let the bulb cool if the turn signal or hazard lights were recently used.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves when handling the new bulb. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not pull on the wiring harness. Pull only on the bulb socket body.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this repair.

- Flat-blade trim clip remover

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Altima on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 💡 Turn all exterior lights OFF.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- 📦 Open the trunk and remove anything blocking access to the tail lamp area.
- 📌 A trim clip remover is a small pry tool used to remove plastic clips without damaging the trunk liner.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Trunk
- Use your hand to open the trunk fully.
- Use a work light to illuminate the inside corner of the trunk behind the tail lamp you are repairing.
Step 2: Move the Trunk Side Liner Aside
- Use the flat-blade trim clip remover to carefully lift out the plastic trunk liner clips near the tail lamp area.
- Pull the trunk side liner inward by hand just enough to access the rear of the tail lamp assembly.
- Do not crease the liner sharply.
- Only move what you need.
Step 3: Locate the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Use the work light to look at the back side of the tail lamp assembly.
- The rear turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber turn signal bulb in the tail lamp assembly.
- Follow the wiring to the socket and confirm it is seated in the lamp housing.
Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to grip the rear turn signal bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
- Do not use pliers on the socket because it can crack.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling straight outward.
- Inspect the socket for corrosion, heat damage, or melted plastic.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new rear turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Make sure the bulb does not feel loose in the socket.
- Keep fingers off the glass.
Step 7: Test the Bulb Before Reassembly
- Use your hand to operate the turn signal stalk for the side you replaced.
- Check that the new rear turn signal flashes at a normal speed.
- Turn the signal OFF before reinstalling the socket.
- If the bulb does not light, remove it by hand, reseat it fully, and test again.
Step 8: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to align the socket tabs with the openings in the tail lamp housing.
- Push the socket straight into the housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
- The socket should sit flush and feel secure.
Step 9: Reinstall the Trunk Liner
- Use your hand to move the trunk side liner back into its original position.
- Use your hand to push the plastic clips back into place until fully seated.
- If any lamp retaining nuts were loosened for access, use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 1/4-inch drive 6-inch extension to snug them evenly.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if a tail lamp retaining nut was removed or loosened.
Step 10: Repeat on the Other Side if Replacing in Pairs
- Use the same tools and steps on the opposite rear turn signal bulb.
- Replacing both rear turn signal bulbs together helps keep brightness and color even.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the left turn signal and verify the left rear lamp flashes normally.
- ✅ Turn on the right turn signal and verify the right rear lamp flashes normally.
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and walk around your Altima to confirm all four corners flash.
- ✅ If fast blinking continues, check the front and rear bulbs on that same side.
- ✅ Make sure the trunk liner is clipped back in place and nothing is rattling inside the trunk.
