🔧 Tucson - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulb in the tail lamp assembly on your Tucson. A burned-out rear turn signal can make lane changes unsafe and may cause rapid flashing from the turn signal indicator.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes per side

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on a flat surface and switch the ignition fully off before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulb cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth when handling bulbs to avoid skin oil on the glass.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear turn signal bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Put your Tucson in Park and apply the parking brake.
  • 📋 Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • 📋 Open the liftgate to access the rear lamp fasteners.
  • 📋 Check which side is not working by briefly using the turn signal or hazard switch, then turn everything off again.
  • 📋 A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches on painted or plastic panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use your hands to fully open the liftgate.
  • Stand beside the tail lamp you are replacing.
  • Make sure the ignition and all exterior lights are off.

Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Screws

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the visible screws on the inner edge of the rear tail lamp assembly.
  • Set the screws in a small safe spot so they do not roll away.
  • Tip: A cup works great.

Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool at the outer edge of the lamp if it feels stuck.
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward with your hands.
  • Do not twist the lamp side to side; alignment pins hold it in place and can break if forced.
  • Tip: Pull straight back, not outward.

Step 4: Locate the Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Use safety glasses while working behind the lamp.
  • Find the rear turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp assembly.
  • The socket is the plastic piece that twists into the lamp housing and holds the bulb.

Step 5: Remove the Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to turn the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Replace the Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to handle the bulb.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket if it is a wedge-style bulb.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
  • If the bulb has metal side pins, gently press in and twist counterclockwise to remove it, then install the new bulb by pressing in and twisting clockwise.
  • Tip: Match the old bulb base.

Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise until it locks firmly in place.
  • Make sure the socket seal sits flat to help keep water out.

Step 8: Test the Turn Signal Before Reassembly

  • Use the hazard switch or turn signal stalk to test the new bulb.
  • Confirm the rear turn signal flashes normally.
  • Turn the lights off again before reinstalling the lamp.

Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Use your hands to line up the lamp guide pins with the body openings.
  • Push the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly against the body.
  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the tail lamp screws.
  • Tighten the screws snugly by hand only; Hyundai does not require heavy force here.
  • Torque to snug hand-tight only; do not overtighten plastic lamp screws.

Step 10: Final Light Check

  • Use the hazard switch to check both rear turn signals.
  • Use the brake pedal and parking lights to make sure no wiring was disturbed.
  • Close the liftgate when finished.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the dashboard turn signal indicator flashes at a normal speed.
  • ✅ If the signal still flashes rapidly, check that the bulb is fully seated and the correct bulb type was installed.
  • ✅ Check the tail lamp edge for even fitment and make sure no gaps are visible.
  • ✅ No scan tool reset, coding, or battery registration is needed.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 per side (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$20 per bulb (parts only)

You Save: $35-$70 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
