🔧 Tucson - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulbs in your Tucson’s tail lamp assemblies. A failed bulb can make your turn signal flash fast, stop working, or trigger a safety issue because drivers behind you cannot clearly see your lane-change signal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching the lamp housing.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 10mm socket

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tucson on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn all lights OFF.
- Open the liftgate to access the rear tail lamp fasteners.
- A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps release panels or lamp housings without scratching paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to open the liftgate fully.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at the inner edge of the tail lamp on the side you are repairing.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Fasteners
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the visible tail lamp screws on the inner edge of the lamp assembly.
- If your Tucson has 10mm retaining bolts instead of Phillips screws, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove them.
- Set the screws or bolts in a safe place so they do not roll away.
- Tip: A cup works great for small screws.
Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Use both hands to pull the tail lamp straight rearward from the body.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool gently at the outer edge to help release the alignment pins.
- Do not twist the lamp hard. The plastic alignment pins can break.
- No torque is used during removal.
Step 4: Find the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
- The turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber flashing signal bulb.
- Use your hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling straight out.
- Do not squeeze the glass hard.
Step 6: Install the New Rear Turn Signal Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new rear turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Make sure it is not loose in the socket.
- Tip: Replace both sides for even bulb life.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Use your hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
- Do not force it. It should lock with a short twist.
Step 8: Test the Turn Signal Before Reassembly
- Use your hand to turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Move the turn signal stalk to the side you repaired.
- Check that the new rear turn signal bulb flashes normally.
- Turn the ignition OFF after testing.
Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Line up the tail lamp alignment pins with the body openings.
- Use both hands to press the lamp straight forward until it seats flush with the body.
- Make sure the rubber seal sits flat and is not pinched.
Step 10: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Fasteners
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the tail lamp screws until snug.
- If your Tucson uses bolts, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall them.
- Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs) if using 10mm bolts.
- Do not overtighten. The lamp housing is plastic and can crack.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Test the left and right turn signals.
- ✅ Test the hazard lights.
- ✅ Walk around the rear of your Tucson and confirm both rear signals flash at normal speed.
- ✅ Make sure the tail lamp sits flush and does not move when gently pressed.
- ✅ If the turn signal still flashes fast, check the opposite bulb or inspect the socket for corrosion.
