🔧 Focus - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp from inside the trunk, swap the turn-signal bulb in the socket, then reinstall the lamp. This is usually quick, but the lamp housing can be tight in its body clips, so take your time to avoid cracking it.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and switch all lights OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you remove it so it doesn’t drop and crack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 2 to replace both sides)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Tip: Replacing bulbs in pairs helps match brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the trunk and use a flashlight to find the access area behind the tail lamp.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pull back the trunk side lining or open/remove the access cover (if equipped).

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts

  • Use an 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the retaining nuts for the tail lamp.
  • Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk trim.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • From outside the car, hold the lamp with one hand.
  • Gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips.
  • If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool at the edge and work slowly—don’t pry hard on the lens.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn-signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Tip: If it wiggles loosely, it’s not seated.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Reinstall the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal and hazards.
  • If it doesn’t work, turn everything OFF and re-check bulb seating and socket lock.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp

  • Align the tail lamp’s guide pins with the body holes, then press the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using an 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Reinstall the trunk lining/access cover using the plastic trim removal tool as needed.

âś… After Repair

  • Test: left turn, right turn, hazards, brake lights, and tail lights.
  • Verify the tail lamp sits evenly and doesn’t wobble.
  • If the new bulb flashes fast, you may have another bulb out on that side.
