🔧 Malibu - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Malibu’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp housing and can be replaced from inside the trunk. You’ll remove a small trunk trim access cover, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamps cool for a few minutes—bulbs can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and clear out cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Use a flashlight to locate the access area behind the tail lamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the access cover behind the tail lamp
- Go into the trunk on the side of the bulb you’re replacing (left or right).
- Find the small trim access cover/carpet flap behind the tail lamp area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the cover open or pull the flap back.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool to avoid scratches.
Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Look for the bulb socket going into the tail lamp housing (you’ll see wiring leading to it).
- Grip the socket and twist it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp.
- If it’s tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and wiggle gently—don’t force it.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (use nitrile gloves).
- Push the new 7440 amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, wipe it with a clean dry cloth before installing.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket
- Line up the socket tabs with the tail lamp housing.
- Insert the socket and twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Make sure the socket sits flush (not cocked or loose).
Step 5: Test the turn signal and reassemble the trunk trim
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and test that side turn signal.
- Do a quick hazard light test to confirm the blink rate looks normal.
- Reinstall the access cover using your hands, or use a plastic trim removal tool to press clips back in gently.
âś… After Repair
- Verify both rear turn signals blink at a normal speed (fast blinking usually means a bulb isn’t working).
- Check at night to confirm brightness matches left-to-right.
- If the new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and reseat the bulb, then retest.
