🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb - Replacement

The rear turn signal bulbs on your Equinox are replaced from the back of each tail lamp assembly. You’ll remove the lamp housing, swap the bulb in the socket, then reinstall everything and test both signals.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and make sure the exterior lights are switched off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool completely if the lights were recently on. Halogen bulbs get very hot.
  • Do not touch the glass part of a new bulb with your bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Support the tail lamp housing carefully so the locating pins do not crack when removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shift to Park and switch the ignition off.
  • Open the rear liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the cargo area access

  • Open the rear liftgate.
  • Move any cargo away from the tail lamp area.
  • Use a trim panel tool if needed to gently move aside the small trim cover in the cargo area for access to the lamp fasteners.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and short extension to remove the tail lamp nuts.
  • Keep the nuts in a safe place.
  • Work slowly so the lamp does not bind.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locator pins.
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle the housing by hand. Do not pry hard against the body panel.
  • Once loose, disconnect the lamp enough to access the bulb socket.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the rear turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp assembly.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • If needed, use a clean glove for better grip.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb firmly into the socket. The bulb should seat fully.
  • Match the bulb base exactly.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Position the tail lamp assembly back into place, making sure the locator pins line up.
  • Reinstall the 10mm nuts and tighten to 3 N·m (27 in-lbs).

Step 7: Test the repair

  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • Make sure the new bulb flashes normally and the lens is seated correctly.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both rear turn signals from outside the vehicle.
  • Also verify the brake lights and taillights still work.
  • If the flash rate is unusually fast, recheck the bulb seating.
