🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

• Open the rear liftgate fully so you can access the inner edge of the tail lamp.
• Use safety glasses to protect your eyes from dirt or loose debris around the lamp area.

Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Retaining Bolts

• Locate the two bolts on the inner side of the rear tail lamp assembly.
• Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove both bolts.
• Place the bolts somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
• Tip: A cup works great for bolts.

Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly

• Hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward, away from the body.
• If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool gently at the outer edge to help release the locating pins.
• Do not twist the lamp sideways. Pulling straight back protects the plastic guide pins.
• Tip: Gentle wiggles help release tight pins.

Step 4: Locate the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket

• Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
• The rear turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber turn signal section.
• Use a clean microfiber towel to support the lamp so it does not scratch the paint.

Step 5: Remove the Bulb Socket

• Use your gloved hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
• A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp assembly.

Step 6: Replace the Bulb

• Use nitrile gloves to pull the old rear turn signal bulb straight out of the socket.
• Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
• If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber towel.

Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

• Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp assembly.
• Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
• Make sure the socket sits flat and secure so water cannot enter the lamp.

Step 8: Test the Turn Signal Before Reassembly

• Have a helper turn the ignition ON and activate the turn signal for that side.
• If working alone, turn on the hazard lights and check the rear bulb operation.
• Turn the ignition OFF again before reinstalling the lamp.

Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

• Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body openings.
• Push the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly against the body.
• Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the two bolts.
• Torque to snug by hand only, approximately 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
• Do not overtighten. The lamp housing can crack.

Step 10: Final Function Check

• Turn the ignition ON and check the left turn signal, right turn signal, and hazard lights.
• Walk around the rear of your Highlander to confirm the repaired side flashes normally.
• If the signal flashes very fast, the bulb may not be seated correctly or the wrong bulb may be installed.
