🔧 Tucson - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulbs in your Tucson’s tail lamp assemblies. A burned-out rear turn signal bulb reduces visibility to other drivers and can cause fast blinking from the turn signal indicator.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth when handling bulbs. Skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Do not force the lamp housing. The plastic alignment pins can break.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear turn signal bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn all exterior lights OFF.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before touching the replacement bulb.
  • 📦 Open the liftgate to access the rear tail lamp mounting screws.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use your hand to fully open the liftgate.
  • Stand at the rear corner of the side you are replacing.
  • The rear turn signal bulb is inside the outer tail lamp assembly mounted to the body.

Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Screws

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the visible tail lamp retaining screws along the liftgate opening.
  • Place the screws somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
  • Tip: A cup works great.

Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool at the inner edge of the tail lamp if it feels stuck.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward with both hands.
  • The lamp has plastic guide pins. Pull straight back, not sideways.
  • Tip: Wiggle gently, do not pry hard.

Step 4: Locate the Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
  • The turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber flashing lamp.
  • A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp housing.

Step 5: Remove the Bulb Socket

  • Use your hand to rotate the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
  • No wrench is needed for this step.

Step 6: Remove the Old Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to grip the old bulb.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket if it is a wedge-style bulb.
  • If your replacement bulb has side pins, push down slightly and twist counterclockwise to remove it.
  • Do not crush the glass.

Step 7: Install the New Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves to handle the new rear turn signal bulb.
  • Install the bulb into the socket the same way the old bulb came out.
  • Make sure it seats fully and feels secure.
  • If you touched the glass, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber cloth.

Step 8: Test the Turn Signal Before Reassembly

  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the turn signal stalk to switch on the side you repaired.
  • Confirm the new bulb flashes normally.
  • Turn the ignition OFF again before reinstalling the lamp.

Step 9: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Use your hand to insert the bulb socket into the tail lamp housing.
  • Rotate the socket clockwise until it locks.
  • It should stop firmly. Do not overtighten by hand.

Step 10: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Line up the plastic guide pins with the body openings.
  • Use both hands to push the tail lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the retaining screws.
  • Torque to snug only, approximately 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs)
  • Tip: Stop when the screw seats.

Step 11: Final Light Check

  • Use the turn signal stalk to check the repaired side again.
  • Use the hazard switch to confirm both rear turn signals flash.
  • Close the liftgate by hand when finished.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the turn signal no longer flashes rapidly on the dashboard.
  • ✅ Walk around the rear of your Tucson and verify both rear signals are bright and even.
  • ✅ If the new bulb does not work, remove it and check that it is fully seated in the socket.
  • ✅ If the bulb still does not work, inspect the socket for corrosion or loose terminals.
