🔧 Focus - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces both rear turn signal bulbs in your Focus sedan. You’ll access each rear lamp from inside the trunk, remove the lamp assembly, twist out the turn signal bulb socket, and install the new bulbs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition and exterior lights off before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the rear lamps cool for a few minutes if the lights were just used.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves when handling bulbs. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Focus on level ground.
- Shift to Park if automatic, or 1st gear if manual.
- Set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- Open the trunk and clear items away from both rear corners.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small plastic pry tool used to remove trunk clips without damaging them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the trunk and access the left rear lamp
- Use your hands to pull back the trunk liner at the left rear corner.
- If plastic clips hold the liner, use the trim clip removal tool to gently pry them out.
- If a clip is tight, use the 1/4-inch flathead screwdriver carefully under the clip edge.
- Use gentle pressure only.
Step 2: Remove the left rear lamp retaining fasteners
- Look behind the left rear lamp from inside the trunk.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the lamp retaining nuts if equipped.
- If your Focus uses hand-turn plastic nuts, remove them by hand instead.
- Place the nuts where they cannot roll into the trunk trim.
Step 3: Remove the left rear lamp assembly
- Use both hands to pull the lamp straight rearward from the body.
- Do not twist the lamp side-to-side. It uses alignment pins that slide straight out.
- If the lamp is tight, hold it with a clean microfiber towel for better grip.
- Do not use a screwdriver between the lamp and painted body.
Step 4: Remove the left rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the rear lamp housing.
- The turn signal bulb is the amber flashing bulb used when you signal left or right.
- Use your hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 5: Replace the left rear turn signal bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- If it does not slide in easily, rotate the bulb slightly and try again.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 6: Reinstall the left turn signal socket
- Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
- Use your hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- Check that the socket sits flat and the seal is not pinched.
Step 7: Reinstall the left rear lamp assembly
- Line up the rear lamp alignment pins with the body openings.
- Push the lamp straight into place by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the retaining nuts if equipped.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if using a torque wrench, or tighten gently until snug.
- Do not overtighten because the lamp studs are plastic and can crack.
Step 8: Repeat the repair on the right rear lamp
- Use your hands and the trim clip removal tool to pull back the right trunk liner.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the right lamp retaining nuts if equipped.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward by hand.
- Turn the right rear turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Turn the socket clockwise by hand until locked.
- Reinstall the right rear lamp and tighten the fasteners.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if using a torque wrench, or tighten gently until snug.
Step 9: Reinstall the trunk trim
- Push the trunk liner back into place by hand.
- Press each plastic clip straight in until it seats.
- Use the trim clip removal tool if a clip needs help lining up.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to accessory or run position.
- Switch on the left turn signal and confirm the left rear bulb flashes normally.
- Switch on the right turn signal and confirm the right rear bulb flashes normally.
- Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
- If one side flashes very fast, the bulb may not be seated fully or the wrong bulb type may be installed.
- Check that both rear lamp housings sit flush against the body.
