🔧 RAV4 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your RAV4 is a beginner-friendly job. The rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp assembly, and you’ll access it by loosening the lamp from the body and twisting the bulb socket out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the vehicle fully OFF and keep the key fob away from the cabin so the hybrid system cannot ready itself.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Work gently around the tail lamp because the plastic locating pins can crack if the lamp is pried sideways.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Rear turn signal bulb, amber 7440A/7440NA type - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear turn signal bulbs, amber 7440A/7440NA type - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your RAV4 on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Press the POWER button OFF and confirm the instrument cluster is off.
  • Open the liftgate to access the inner edge of the rear tail lamp.
  • A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches and broken clips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use your hand to open the rear liftgate fully.
  • Put on safety glasses and clean nitrile gloves.
  • Locate the two exposed 10mm bolts on the inner edge of the tail lamp assembly.

Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the two tail lamp retaining bolts.
  • Place the bolts somewhere safe so they do not fall into the body opening.
  • Use light pressure only.

Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward from the vehicle body.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully at the outer edge to help release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist the lamp side-to-side; the plastic guide pins are easy to damage.

Step 4: Remove the Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly and find the rear turn signal bulb socket.
  • The turn signal socket is the one for the amber flashing bulb.
  • Use your gloved hand to turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 5: Replace the Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb, amber 7440A/7440NA type straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Do not force it. If it does not slide in, rotate it and try again.
  • Never touch bulb glass bare-handed.

Step 6: Test the Bulb Before Reassembly

  • Keep the bulb socket hanging safely outside the lamp opening.
  • Use your hand to press the hazard warning switch on the dashboard.
  • Confirm the new rear turn signal bulb flashes correctly.
  • Press the hazard warning switch again to turn the flashers off.

Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to insert the bulb socket into the tail lamp housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
  • Make sure the socket sits flat so water cannot enter the lamp.

Step 8: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Line up the tail lamp locating pins with the body holes.
  • Push the lamp straight forward by hand until it seats evenly against the body.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the two bolts.
  • Torque to 5.0 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • If you do not have a small torque wrench, tighten the bolts snug only. Do not overtighten.

Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and plastic trim removal tool to replace the other rear turn signal bulb if replacing in pairs.
  • Replacing both sides helps keep bulb brightness and color even.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn on the left and right turn signals and check both rear lamps.
  • ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both rear turn signal bulbs flash at a normal speed.
  • ✅ If the turn signal flashes very fast, the bulb may be loose, incorrect, or not seated fully.
  • ✅ Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and the liftgate closes normally.
