🔧 RAV4 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the left and right rear turn signal bulbs on your RAV4. The rear turn signal bulb sockets are accessed from the back of each taillight area, and the process is simple if you work gently with the plastic sockets.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn all exterior lights and hazard lights off before removing bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for several minutes if the lights were recently used.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves so skin oil does not get on the new bulb glass.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on the wiring harness. Pull and twist only the bulb socket.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your RAV4 on level ground.
  • 🅿️ Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the turn signal switch and hazard switch OFF.
  • 🚪 Open the liftgate fully.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling new bulbs.
  • ℹ️ A bulb socket is the plastic holder that the bulb plugs into and twists into the lamp housing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use your hand to open the liftgate fully so you can reach the inner edge of each rear combination lamp.
  • Use the flashlight to look at the inner side of the taillight housing near the liftgate opening.

Step 2: Remove the Left Rear Lamp Cover or Fastener Access

  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently remove the small trim cover hiding the rear lamp fasteners, if equipped.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
  • Plastic tabs break if rushed.

Step 3: Remove the Left Rear Lamp Fasteners

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the exposed rear combination lamp retaining bolts.
  • Support the lamp with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Keep the bolts in a safe place.

Step 4: Pull the Left Rear Lamp Straight Back

  • Use both hands to pull the lamp assembly straight rearward from the body.
  • Do not pry against the painted body panel.
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle the lamp while pulling straight back.
  • Do not yank the lamp because the wiring is still attached.

Step 5: Remove the Left Rear Turn Signal Socket

  • Use the flashlight to identify the rear turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp housing.
  • Use your gloved hand to turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 6: Replace the Left Rear Turn Signal Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Use the clean microfiber towel to wipe the glass if touched with bare fingers.
  • Seat the bulb fully.

Step 7: Reinstall the Left Rear Turn Signal Socket

  • Use the flashlight to align the socket tabs with the slots in the lamp housing.
  • Push the socket into the lamp housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
  • No torque spec applies. This is a hand-tight twist-lock socket.

Step 8: Reinstall the Left Rear Lamp Assembly

  • Use both hands to align the lamp guide pins with the body openings.
  • Push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush with the body.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the retaining bolts.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Use your hand to reinstall the trim cover, if removed.

Step 9: Replace the Right Rear Turn Signal Bulb

  • Repeat Steps 2 through 8 on the right rear lamp assembly.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool for the cover, if equipped.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet for the lamp fasteners.
  • Use the flashlight to identify the turn signal socket before twisting it out.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs) when reinstalling the lamp fasteners.

Step 10: Test the Rear Turn Signals

  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the left rear turn signal.
  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the right rear turn signal.
  • Press the hazard switch and confirm both rear turn signal bulbs flash evenly.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm both rear turn signals flash at normal speed.
  • ✅ If one side flashes fast, turn the lights off and recheck that bulb connection.
  • ✅ Make sure both lamp assemblies sit flush with the body.
  • ✅ Check that the liftgate opens and closes without rubbing the lamps.
  • ✅ No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required.
