🔧 F-150 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your F-150’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp assembly. To replace it, you remove the tail lamp, twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on lighting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can be very hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear stop/turn/park bulb (3157 type) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to P.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp screws.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inside edge of the tail lamp (accessible with the tailgate open).
  • Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.

Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly off

  • Grip the tail lamp and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it pop free.
  • Pull straight back to avoid breaking the alignment pins.

Step 3: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket

  • Find the socket for the stop/turn/park bulb (it’s typically the larger, brighter bulb socket).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out of the tail lamp.
  • (A “bulb socket” is the plastic holder the bulb locks into.)

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new 3157 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Align the tail lamp’s guide pins with the body and push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
  • Install the two screws using the Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal on that side.
  • Test hazards, brake lights, and parking lights to confirm the correct bulb/socket was reinstalled.
  • If the signal “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), recheck bulb seating and the socket connection.
