🔧 Civic - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

The rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail light assembly and can be replaced from inside the trunk. You’ll remove a small access cover, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, then test the signals.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the key OFF.
  • 🔸 Let the tail light cool if it was recently on (bulbs get hot).
  • 🔸 Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life).
  • 🔸 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4")
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work at the tail light area.
  • Decide which side you’re doing first (driver side = left, passenger side = right).
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail light from inside the trunk

  • Use a flashlight to find the carpet/liner behind the tail light area.
  • Remove the access cover or pull the trunk liner back using a trim clip removal tool (a trim tool is a small pry tool used to pop plastic clips without breaking them).

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket (the plastic piece the bulb plugs into).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, gently assist with a small flathead screwdriver on the socket tabs (do not pry on the lens).

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (dielectric grease helps keep moisture out).

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and trunk trim

  • Reinsert the socket into the tail light housing.
  • Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Reinstall the access cover/liner and any clips you removed using the trim clip removal tool.

Step 5: If you removed the tail light nuts (only if needed)

  • If you had to remove the tail light assembly for access, reinstall the retaining nuts using an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension (1/4").
  • Torque to 3.9 Nm (35 in-lbs)

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the key to ON and test left/right turn signals and hazard lights.
  • Confirm the replaced side flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t seated or another bulb is out).
  • Make sure the trunk liner is secured so it won’t rattle.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $5-$25 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
