🔧 Camry - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Camry’s rear turn signals use a small bulb inside the tail lamp assembly. The job is done from inside the trunk by removing a trim access cover, twisting out the bulb socket, and swapping the bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working around the lights.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first—they can be hot right after use.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep the trunk lid securely open so it can’t fall.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the ignition is OFF.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you have room to work.
- Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp from inside the trunk
- Open the trunk and look behind the tail lamp area on the side you’re replacing.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic retainers holding the trunk liner or access cover.
- If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a flathead screwdriver (small). Go slow to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Find the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to identify the bulb sockets going into the back of the tail lamp.
- Locate the turn signal socket (it will be one of the twist-lock sockets; if unsure, do one side at a time so you can compare).
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip. Do not pry hard on the lamp housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (wiggle gently if needed).
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (7440) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Keep your fingers off the bulb glass (use nitrile gloves).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp opening.
- Twist clockwise about a quarter turn by hand until it locks in place (snug, not forced).
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal.
Step 6: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk liner/access cover.
- Press the retainers back in by hand; if needed, start them squarely and press evenly.
âś… After Repair
- Verify the turn signal flashes normally (not fast). Fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated.
- Check both left and right turn signals, and the hazard lights.
- If the new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and reinstall it to ensure it’s fully seated, then re-check the socket is locked.
