🔧 Frontier - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces both rear turn signal bulbs in your Frontier. The rear lamp assemblies must be removed from the truck bed, then each turn signal bulb socket twists out from the back of the lamp.

📋 Before You Begin

• 🚗 Park your Frontier on a flat surface with the parking brake engaged.
• 💡 Turn the ignition and exterior light switch OFF.
• 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
• 📌 A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks into the back of the taillight housing.
• 📌 Dielectric grease is protective electrical grease used lightly around the bulb base seal to help keep moisture out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lower the Tailgate

• Use your hands to open and lower the tailgate completely.
• Look at the inside edge of the left rear lamp assembly next to the tailgate opening.
• You will see two Phillips screws holding the lamp assembly to the bed.

Step 2: Remove the Left Rear Lamp Screws

• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws from the left rear lamp assembly.
• Place the screws on a clean microfiber towel so they do not get lost.
• Tip: Push firmly while turning.

Step 3: Pull the Left Rear Lamp Assembly Off

• Use both hands to pull the lamp assembly straight rearward from the truck.
• If it feels stuck, use a trim clip removal tool gently at the outer edge to help release the guide pins.
• A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool that helps release plastic clips without cracking the lamp.
• Do not pull the lamp far away because the wiring is still attached.

Step 4: Remove the Left Turn Signal Socket

• Find the rear turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp assembly.
• Use your gloved hand to turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 5: Remove the Old Left Turn Signal Bulb

• Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
• Do not twist the bulb. It is a push-in style bulb.
• Check the socket for green corrosion, melted plastic, or loose metal contacts.

Step 6: Install the New Left Turn Signal Bulb

• Use nitrile gloves to handle the new 3156A amber bulb.
• Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease around the bulb base seal only.
• Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
• Tip: A loose bulb may not flash.

Step 7: Reinstall the Left Turn Signal Socket

• Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
• Use your gloved hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
• Make sure the socket sits flat and secure against the housing.

Step 8: Reinstall the Left Rear Lamp Assembly

• Line up the lamp guide pins with the holes in the truck bed.
• Push the lamp assembly straight forward until it sits flush.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the two screws.
• Tighten the screws snug only. Do not overtighten because the plastic lamp housing can crack.

Step 9: Replace the Right Rear Turn Signal Bulb

• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws from the right rear lamp assembly.
• Use both hands to pull the lamp assembly straight rearward.
• If needed, use a trim clip removal tool gently to release the guide pins.
• Turn the right rear turn signal socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
• Pull the old bulb straight out by hand.
• Install the new 3156A amber bulb using nitrile gloves.
• Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease around the bulb base seal.
• Reinstall the socket by turning it clockwise by hand until locked.
• Reinstall the lamp assembly with the Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 10: Test the Rear Turn Signals

• Use your hand to turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
• Move the turn signal stalk down to test the left rear turn signal.
• Move the turn signal stalk up to test the right rear turn signal.
• Turn on the hazard switch and confirm both rear bulbs flash evenly.
• If a bulb flashes very fast, remove that bulb and make sure it is fully seated in the socket.

• ✅ Confirm both rear lamp assemblies sit flush against the bed.
• ✅ Make sure all four lamp screws are snug.
• ✅ Test left turn signal, right turn signal, and hazard lights before driving.
• ✅ If a new bulb does not work, inspect the socket contacts and reinstall the bulb firmly.
