🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lower the Tailgate

• Use both hands to open and lower the tailgate fully.
• Use a flashlight to look at the inner edge of the driver side tail lamp.
• You will see the tail lamp retaining bolts exposed by the open tailgate.
• Keep bolts in a cup.

Step 2: Remove the Driver Side Tail Lamp Bolts

• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining bolts on the inner edge of the lamp.
• Support the tail lamp with your free hand while removing the last bolt.
• There is no service torque for removal; just loosen the bolts counterclockwise.

Step 3: Release the Driver Side Tail Lamp Assembly

• Hold the tail lamp with both hands.
• Pull the lamp straight rearward from the truck body.
• If it feels stuck, place a clean microfiber towel between the paint and a plastic trim removal tool, then gently help the lamp move rearward.
• Do not pry outward to the side; pull straight back to release the locating pins.
• Straight back prevents broken pins.

Step 4: Identify the Rear Turn Signal Socket

• Use a flashlight to view the bulb sockets on the back of the tail lamp.
• The rear turn signal bulb is the amber bulb position in the tail lamp assembly.
• Do not confuse it with the brake/tail lamp or reverse lamp socket.

Step 5: Remove the Driver Side Turn Signal Socket

• Grip the turn signal bulb socket by the plastic base with your gloved hand.
• Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp assembly.
• No torque spec applies because the socket is a hand-tight twist-lock design.

Step 6: Replace the Driver Side Bulb

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
• Push the new rear turn signal bulb 7440A/7440NA amber straight into the socket until fully seated.
• Do not twist the glass bulb while installing it.
• If the bulb feels loose, remove it and push it in again squarely.

Step 7: Reinstall the Driver Side Socket

• Insert the socket into the tail lamp opening.
• Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
• Gently wiggle the socket by hand to confirm it is seated.

Step 8: Reinstall the Driver Side Tail Lamp Assembly

• Line up the tail lamp locating pins with the holes in the truck body.
• Push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush with the body.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the retaining bolts.
• Torque the tail lamp bolts snug by hand, about 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten; the lamp housing is plastic.

Step 9: Remove the Passenger Side Tail Lamp Bolts

• Move to the passenger side rear tail lamp.
• Use a flashlight to locate the retaining bolts exposed by the open tailgate.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining bolts.
• Support the lamp with your free hand as the last bolt comes out.

Step 10: Release the Passenger Side Tail Lamp Assembly

• Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
• If needed, use a clean microfiber towel and plastic trim removal tool to gently help release the lamp.
• Keep the pull straight back so the locating pins do not snap.

Step 11: Remove the Passenger Side Turn Signal Socket

• Use a flashlight to identify the amber turn signal bulb socket.
• Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand.
• Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp assembly.
• No torque spec applies because the socket locks by hand.

Step 12: Replace the Passenger Side Bulb

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
• Push the new rear turn signal bulb 7440A/7440NA amber straight into the socket until fully seated.
• Keep the bulb clean and avoid touching the glass if possible.

Step 13: Reinstall the Passenger Side Socket

• Insert the socket into the tail lamp assembly.
• Turn it clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
• Gently check that the socket is not loose.

Step 14: Reinstall the Passenger Side Tail Lamp Assembly

• Align the locating pins with the body openings.
• Push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the retaining bolts.
• Torque the tail lamp bolts snug by hand, about 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten the bolts.

Step 15: Test Both Rear Turn Signals

• Turn the ignition on without starting the engine if needed.
• Move the turn signal stalk down to test the left rear turn signal.
• Move the turn signal stalk up to test the right rear turn signal.
• Use the hazard switch to flash both sides together if you are working alone.
• Use a flashlight only if visibility behind the truck is poor.
