š§ Durango - Rear Turn Signal Replacement
On your Durango, the rear turn signal is either a replaceable bulb in the tail lamp housing or an LED (light-emitting diode) unit that requires replacing the tail lamp assembly. The steps below walk you through safely removing the tail lamp, then swapping the bulb or assembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- š Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.

- š§© Pull the tail lamp straight backādonāt twistāso you donāt break the locating pins.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4")
- Trim panel removal tool
- Torque wrench (in-lb)
- Work light
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (correct fitment) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs for matching brightness

- Rear tail lamp assembly (if LED turn signal) - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- š æļø Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- šŖ Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- š§° A trim panel removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels/clips without scratching.
- š§“ Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent corrosion in electrical connectors.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm whether itās a bulb or LED
- Use a work light and look at the rear lamp while someone turns the signal on, or use the hazard lights.
- If the turn signal area looks like many small dots (LED) and thereās no twist-out socket for that position, itās usually LED (assembly replacement).
- If you can access a twist-out socket at the back of the tail lamp, itās a replaceable bulb.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery (recommended if unplugging the lamp)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal and move it aside so it canāt spring back.
Step 3: Remove the rear tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate and locate the tail lamp fasteners along the inboard edge (near the liftgate opening).
- If a small access cover is present, use a trim panel removal tool to pop it off.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension (1/4"), and 1/4" ratchet to remove the tail lamp nuts/bolts.
Step 4: Remove the tail lamp housing
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- Rock gently; donāt pry the paint.
- If it feels stuck, re-check for missed fasteners, then pull straight back again.
Step 5A: If it has a replaceable bulb (most common twist-out socket)
- Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out.
- Install the new bulb (donāt touch the glass with bare fingers; use nitrile gloves).
- Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry.
- Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until fully seated.
Step 5B: If itās LED (no bulb socket for the turn signal)
- Unplug the tail lamp electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector straight off.
- Install the new rear tail lamp assembly and reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal if desired.
Step 6: Reinstall the tail lamp and tighten fasteners
- Align the locating pins on the tail lamp with the body and press the lamp straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the nuts/bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 7: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Snug the clamp so it doesnāt rotate by hand.
ā After Repair
- š Turn on the hazards and confirm the repaired rear turn signal flashes normally.
- š Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and there are no gaps.
- š§ After the next car wash or rain, check inside the lens for moisture (a bad seal or mis-seated socket can leak).
