🔧 Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, swap the turn-signal bulb, then reinstall everything. This is a simple job, but the lamp has locating pins/clips that can crack if you yank it sideways.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your Cherokee uses a replaceable rear turn-signal bulb (non-LED).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp while it’s unplugged so it doesn’t scratch paint.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🧰 Open the liftgate and keep it fully raised for better access.
- 🧼 Place a clean towel near the corner of the bumper to set the lamp on if needed.
- 🔎 Have the new bulb ready, and match its base to the old bulb before installing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- On the side you’re replacing, locate the two tail lamp screws on the lamp edge (visible with the liftgate open).
- Use a flashlight to clearly see the screw heads.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws
- Use a Torx T30 driver to remove the two screws.
- Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t drop into the bumper gap.
- Torque: Not published for these screws; reinstall snug hand-tight (do not overtighten).
Step 3: Release the lamp from the body clips
- Grab the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you), not outward to the side.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently help it start moving.
- A “trim clip” is a plastic locating fastener that pops in/out of a socket; steady pressure releases it.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- With the lamp loose, look at the back of the lamp assembly for the turn-signal bulb socket.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand to unlock it.
- If it’s tight, carefully assist with a small flathead screwdriver on the socket tabs (gentle pressure only).
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Put on clean nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Tip: If you touched glass, wipe with clean alcohol.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Before bolting the lamp back on, turn the ignition to ON and test the rear turn signal.
- If it doesn’t work, turn ignition OFF, remove the socket, and re-seat the bulb fully.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Line up the lamp’s locating pins with the body sockets.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it fully seats.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Torx T30 driver and tighten snug hand-tight.
âś… After Repair
- âś… Verify left and right rear turn signals work.
- âś… Verify tail lights and brake lights still work on that side.
- ✅ Confirm the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.
